Job summary

ALS is seeking a field-based HSE Manager to implement and support Geochemistry HSE programs across the North American region. You will work with operations leadership to ensure regulatory alignment, drive improvements, and provide practical guidance, audits, and investigations to sustain a strong safety culture.

Responsibilities include program adaptation, site support, inspections, incident investigations, and performance monitoring.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of progressive experience in Occupational Health & Safety, ideally within industrial, laboratory, or field operations environments.
• Bachelor’s/advanced degree or equivalent in a relevant field preferred. Strong knowledge of risk assessment methods (JHA/JSA, hazard identification, risk ranking).

About the Position

The HSE Manager is responsible for implementing and supporting Geochemistry Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) programs across an assigned region. Working closely with operations leadership and North America HSE Management, the role ensures HSE programs, standards, and procedures are consistently applied, regulatory requirements are met, and risks are effectively managed. The HSE Manager acts as a field-based partner to operational leaders, providing guidance, coaching, audits, investigations, and practical support to address regional HSE challenges while promoting a strong safety culture.

Specific Responsibilities

HSE Program Implementation

• Implement Global and North American HSE programs, standards, procedures, and initiatives throughout the region.


• Adapt and execute approved HSE programs to address regional operational requirements and risks.


• Support site leaders in applying HSE requirements consistently across all locations.


• Ensure regional compliance with corporate HSE expectations and performance standards.


• Lead regional HSE improvement initiatives and risk reduction projects that enhance process effectiveness, operational controls, and overall HSE performance.


• Coordinate and facilitate HSE Management Reviews to evaluate system effectiveness, compliance performance, and continuous improvement opportunities.

Operational Support

• Serve as the primary HSE resource for regional operations leadership.


• Work directly with managers and supervisors to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.


• Support sites during operational changes, new equipment installations, facility expansions, and process modifications.


• Provide practical solutions to regional HSE challenges.

Compliance & Auditing

• Conduct site inspections, audits, and workplace assessments.


• Monitor compliance with applicable occupational health, safety, environmental, and transportation regulations.


• Ensure corrective actions are completed and documented.


• Support regulatory inspections and agency interactions as required.


• Monitor compliance trends and proactively identify areas requiring corrective or preventive actions.

Incident Management

• Lead or support investigations of incidents, injuries, near misses, and environmental occurrences.


• Conduct root cause analysis and ensure corrective actions are implemented.


• Monitor incident trends and recommend opportunities for risk reduction.


• Support injury management and return-to-work processes as required.

Risk Management

• Facilitate hazard identification and risk assessment activities.


• Lead initiatives focused on reducing operational risk through engineering, administrative, and behavioral controls.


• Verify the effectiveness of controls for high-risk activities.


• Support emergency preparedness and response planning.


• Monitor regional risk indicators and elevate significant concerns to leadership.

Training & Coaching

• Deliver HSE training and awareness initiatives.


• Coach managers and supervisors on HSE responsibilities and expectations.


• Support onboarding and orientation programs related to safety and environmental compliance.


• Promote employee engagement in safety initiatives and reporting processes.

Reporting & Performance Monitoring

• Track and report regional HSE performance metrics.


• Maintain records related to audits, inspections, incidents, and corrective actions.


• Prepare monthly and quarterly HSE summaries for regional leadership.


• Identify trends and communicate opportunities for improvement.

Environmental & Sustainability Support

• Support implementation of environmental compliance requirements.


• Monitor waste management, permit obligations, and environmental controls.


• Assist sites in achieving corporate sustainability objectives.


• Investigate environmental incidents and support corrective actions.

Other

• Use correct methods in accordance with established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality.


• Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures.


• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• 3+ years of progressive experience in Occupational Health & Safety, ideally within an industrial, laboratory, or field operations environment.


• 1+ years of management experience strongly preferred.


• Diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.


• Strong working knowledge of risk assessment methodologies, such as JHA/JSA, hazard identification, risk ranking, and control hierarchies.


• Experience working across multi-site operations is an asset.

Physical Demands

• Ability to sit at a desk and perform general office work for extended periods, with periodic computer/screen use.


• Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) as required when visiting laboratory or field sites;


• Ability to travel to ALS sites across the assigned region up to 40% of the time, including air and ground travel
