Job Description

Under general supervision, assist the board in the fair and just discharge of its obligation to students and staff by fulfilling the head coach role. Reports to the school principal and athletic director.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Full knowledge of all athletic policies approved by Mountain Island Charter School and responsibility for implementing them across the sports program.
• Knowledge of school system, state and conference regulations; consistently implement and interpret them for staff.
• Understand administrative line of command and refer all grievance requests through correct channels; attend required public, staff, and departmental meetings.
• Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff; design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
• Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and at season’s end analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants.
• Assist the Athletic Director with scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sport events.
• Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices, ensuring adherence to facility times.
• Attend all practices and games; provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for participants.
• Collaborate with trainers in the implementation of injury, medical, and emergency programs and policies.
• Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians in high‑school athletics.
• Assist athletes with college or advanced educational selection.
• Participate in budgeting with the Athletic Director, establishing needs for the next season and recommending equipment specifications while remaining within budget.
• Accountable for equipment and fee collection for lost or unreturned items; manage issuing, storing, reconditioning, and inventory reporting.
• Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games, ensuring cleanliness and maintenance of sport equipment.
• Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building when custodians are not on duty.
• Instill respect for equipment and school property, emphasizing care and proper use.
• Promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes not already in other sports.
• Promote the sport externally via news media, community recreation programs, and other appropriate channels.
• Maintain good public relations with media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the school principal in accordance with Mountain Island Charter School policy.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must possess administrative and organizational skills, and a thorough knowledge of Mountain Island Charter School athletic policy and procedure. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and the community.

Minimum Training and Experience

Must meet requirements established by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, and Mountain Island Charter School administration. Prior successful coaching experience in the assigned sport is required.
