The Academic Decathlon Coach is assigned the task of preparing team members for multiple choice tests in science, math, economics, social science, literature, art and music. Team members must also be prepared to compete in the essay, speech, and interview categories. Coaches present materials, practice exams and conduct discussions during weekly practice sessions. Academic Decathlon team members need to be prepared for testing in multiple subject areas that correlate with a major theme. The theme changes yearly. Practices can begin as early as May (if materials are available) and run through January of the following academic year. State qualifiers extend the season into March.
