Job summary

Ledcor Group is seeking an experienced Health & Safety professional to lead site safety efforts across heavy civil/mining projects. You will cover for the HS&E Manager, mentor coordinators, and drive the health and safety program through project lifecycles.

You will collaborate with operations, management, and field staff to enforce compliance, conduct inspections, and deliver toolbox talks. A CSP or OH&S credential is required, with MHSA/OSHA knowledge and MSHA credential highly valued.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of related work experience in heavy civil or mining industries.
  • Strong knowledge of MHSA and OSHA regulations and best practices.
  • MSHA instructor card (Blue Card) and OH&S education are assets.
  • Must hold CSP or OH&S degree/certification.
  • Experience with construction practices and equipment in heavy civil/open pit mining.

Responsibilities

  • Provide coverage for the HS&E Manager while they are off schedule.
  • Lead a smaller HS&E team or project independently.
  • Mentor HS&E Coordinators and Advisors to improve safety processes.
  • Lead the Operations Team through the health and safety management system.
  • Conduct inspections with field supervisors to identify improvements.
  • Ensure adequate safety equipment supply (PPE, extinguishers, respirators).
  • Advise operations on Ledcor's Health and Safety Management System.
  • Monitor compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate inspections, focus audits and incident investigations.
  • Identify HS&E trends and develop action plans.
  • Conduct HS&E orientation for employees and subcontractors on project onboarding.
  • Support toolbox talks and site safety meetings.
  • Develop Job Hazard Analysis and Safe Work Practices.
  • Audit field hazard assessments and incident reports for accuracy.
  • Assist with occupational hygiene practices and screening programs.
  • Support injury/illness management and return-to-work processes.

Job description

You are an experienced Health & Safety resource who consistently conveys professional judgment and can build effective relationships across all levels. You will play a key role in the execution and implementation of a diverse range of health and safety programs and can expect to work on challenging projects with diverse and collaborative teams to meet and exceed Ledcor’s safety standards. This position is site-based and the specific rotation schedule and project location will be determined based on project requirements.


Essential Responsibilities:


  • Provide coverage for the HS&E Manager while they are off schedule.

  • Ability to manage smaller HS&E Team or lead a smaller project independently.

  • Mentorship and Support: You mentor and guide HS&E Coordinators and Advisors, helping them navigate safety processes and improve their effectiveness.

  • Ability to lead the Operations Team through the health and safety management system independently.

  • Conduct inspections of the work area and meet with field supervisors to discuss any potential areas for improvement.

  • Work with the team to ensure the adequate supply of safety equipment, such as protective equipment, fire extinguishers, respirators, etc.

  • Advise operations regarding Ledcor's Health and Safety Management System, based on a solid understanding of program execution throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Monitor compliance with jurisdictional regulatory requirements.

  • Assists in the coordination and completion of inspections, focus audits and incident investigations.

  • Verify compliance with leading and lagging indicators, including subcontractors as well as any identified corrective actions.

  • Identify HS&E trends and develop action plans to address them.

  • Conduct the HS&E Orientation to employees and subcontractors during project onboarding.

  • Provide support to site leadership in the preparation of site-specific material for safety meetings and toolbox talks.

  • Support the coordination, organization and delivery of project toolbox talks and safety meetings.

  • Develop and enhance Job Hazard Analysis and Safe Work Practice documents based on existing materials.

  • Audit the quality of the field level hazard assessments, inspections and incident investigation reports for accuracy and completeness.

  • Assist with the implementation of occupational hygiene practices and have awareness of medical screening programs.

  • Occupational Injury/Illness Management: You support supervisors in managing occupational injuries and illnesses, including monitoring return-to-work processes and implementing preventive safety measures.


Qualifications:


  • 5+ years of related work experience in heavy civil, mining, or related industry.

  • Strong understanding of Mine Health and Safety Administration (MHSA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and best practices.

  • MSHA instructor card (Blue Card) and formal Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) education are an asset.

  • Must hold a CSP, Certificate or Diploma/Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent through on-the-job experience.

  • Has developed technical knowledge of common construction practices, techniques, and equipment within the Heavy Civil Construction and/or Open Pit Mining Industries.

  • Ability to effectively communicate and present information to the hourly workforce, while also effectively interacting with project management staff, clients, and customers.

  • Ability to provide a proactive approach to safety, to include identification of operational and organizational issues, as well as develop and implement strategies to solve them.

  • Demonstrated experience in risk assessment, program development, safety & health training, and accident investigation.

  • Capable of adapting information/style to the audience, explaining difficult information clearly, influencing, and persuading others towards consensus agreement in straightforward situations.

  • A strong team player attitude with the ability to effectively adjust to changing priorities and demands.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills.

  • Strong computer competency including experience with MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

  • Must have and maintain a valid provincial driver’s license and driver's abstract.

  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug & alcohol requirements.


Work Conditions:


  • Flexibility to travel to and work at various project sites will be required.
