Job summary

University of Michigan's Taubman College seeks a human resources specialist to support staff and students, manage HR activities, and build partnerships across the college. You will respond promptly to HR issues and help maintain a positive work environment.

Based in Ann Arbor, the role combines on-site and occasional off-site work, overseeing recruitment, onboarding, contract compliance, and time reporting, with opportunities to influence processes and develop people.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required.
  • 2-3 years of human resources and customer service experience.
  • Data entry experience with an HR information system such as PeopleSoft.

Responsibilities

  • Provide HR support to staff, students, and faculty and resolve a wide variety of concerns.
  • Manage the hiring process for staff and student positions using the university's applicant management system; process postings, prepare job folders, screen and sort candidates, forward resumes, schedule and participate in interviews, conduct reference checks, and prepare/extend offers.
  • Oversee onboarding and offboarding processes and ensure new employees complete all mandatory university training and serve as the I-9 compliance officer.
  • Manage the GSI appointment process, including maintaining the task list and timeline, preparing and posting positions, forwarding resumes and gathering candidate preferences, preparing offer letters and fraction calculation forms, processing offers in eRecruit, serving as a point of contact for GSIs and faculty, and conducting GSI orientations.
  • Serve as the college expert on GEO, USU and UM-PRO union contracts and ensure college compliance.
  • Plan the annual calendar of community building activities and meetings for staff and execute all logistics, gather feedback, assess outcomes, and identify future improvements.
  • Oversee the annual personal development process for staff, review and update the template annually and ensure staff and their managers complete the process.
  • Create and update templates for workflows, draft policies, and proactively identify process improvement opportunities including using new technology and documenting best practices.
  • Develop content for the staff and student HR sections of the college intranet and update as needed.
  • Coordinate with SSC to process PAR transactions, including new hire appointments, changes, annual salary adjustments, and additional payments, and serve as a designated approver.
  • Oversee time reporting for staff and temporary employees, answer questions regarding proper time reporting codes, run queries for missing time or approvals and follow up, troubleshoot payroll errors.
  • Assemble and maintain all employee personnel records, in compliance with legal requirements and university protocols.
  • Assist the HR manager for faculty affairs with promotion and tenure and faculty search tasks, as needed.

The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning is looking for a human resources specialist for staff and students to manage a wide variety of HR activities. Reporting to the chief of staff ( our organizational chart ), you will maintain a positive work environment by ensuring prompt, efficient and professional responses to HR issues and contribute to our community by building trusting partnerships across the college.

This job is situated in Ann Arbor and on-campus work is expected three days a week, with a few offsite weeks throughout the academic year and an offsite period from mid-May to mid-August.

Modes of Work

The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
