Job summary

Sunflower Services PBC is seeking an HR Manager, Employee Relations to support nonprofit clients with employee relations, policy updates, and compliance. The role involves navigating conflict, providing strategic guidance to executives, and collaborating with client contacts and internal teams.

The position offers a hybrid schedule with option for Washington, DC or Durham, NC offices, or fully remote from Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, or Virginia.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of employee relations and employee-facing experience.
  • Working knowledge of multi-state employment laws, as well as NLRA and NLRB processes.
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong client service, interpersonal skills, tact, diplomacy, and integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional daily service to client staff and respond to inquiries promptly.
  • Manage staffing situations and employee relations events including growth, restructuring, terminations, performance issues, and accommodations.
  • Coach and guide executives and managers as a trusted partner on complex HR engagements.
  • Maintain confidentiality of personnel data and handle sensitive information.
  • Support union-related requests and aggregate documentation for internal resources.
  • Assist leave of absence programs, tracking, and vendor coordination.
  • Draft and update HR policies in line with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Provide guidance on HR policies to clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Respond to inquiries via Case Management system in a timely manner.

Position Overview

The HR Manager is a member of a growing team of HR consultants who provide expertise-based services to a suite of non-profit organizations with whomSunflower Services (Sunflower)works. In this role, you will handle employee relations, provide support in the creation and update of policies,andaddress a high volume of HR inquiries forSunflower’snonprofit clients. This role is ideal for an HRprofessional who iscomfortablenavigating throughconflict resolution,customer andemployee facinginteractions. This is a full-time position reporting to theAssociate Director(AD)ofHR.

What You’ll Do
  • Provides exceptional daily service to client staff, communicating quickly,effectivelyand efficiently.
  • Manage a variety of staffing situationsand employee relations, such as rapid or planned growth, restructuring,reductions in force,terminations, performancemanagement, conflict resolution,requests for accommodations,while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and policies.
  • Own complex client HR engagements. Provide coaching, guidance, and strategic leadership to executives and managers as a trusted partner and liaise with client contacts and internal account managers.
  • Maintain employee confidence and protect confidentiality of personnel data.
  • Providesupportinmanagingexisting and emerging union bargaining units.Supportunion-relatedrequests,includingaggregatingdocumentationanddata,andshepherdinginternalresources.
  • Support the management of leave of absence(LOA)programs,including liaising with employees, vendors, and maintaining tracking systems, whilefollowing consistent guidelines and approaches as directed by LOA Lead.
  • Support the research, drafting,and update of HR policies, ensuring our practices stay up to date with changingfederal,multi-state, and local laws andregulations, andensuringemployeesadhere toall applicable laws, regulations, andorganizationalstandards.
  • Maintain and deploy working knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, and benefit plans, and provide guidance and interpretation ofHR policies to internal stakeholders and clients.
  • Respond inan accurateandtimelymanner to all client-facing inquiries assigned via the Case Management system.
Other Responsibilities
  • Support triage, tracking, case response, and assignment for case loggingsystemto provide exceptional daily service to client staff.
  • Work cooperatively with various team members to ensure implementation and management ofinternalprocesses designed for regulatory compliance.
  • Troubleshoot issues and solve problems independently or elevate when necessary.
  • Other dutiesassigned.
What You’ll Bring
  • 3+years ofEmployee Relationsand employee-facingexperience.
  • Working knowledge ofmulti-stateemployment laws,as well as NLRAandNLRBprocesses.
  • Outstanding organization and prioritization skills - ability to manage multiple demands,projectsand deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong client service and interpersonal skills such as tact and diplomacyrequired.
  • Ability to think critically.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with a strong customer service mentality andhighdegree of integrity, accountability, and emotional intelligence.
  • Highly effective at communicating analysis, recommendations, and conclusions.
  • Ability to draft high-quality correspondence and written materials.
  • Optimism and adaptability.
  • Passion for philanthropy, nonprofits, or foundation operations.
  • Preferred, but Not Required:
    • Union environment experienceand workplace investigation experience.
    • Experience in a progressive, mission-driven, and entrepreneurial environment
    • Experience in professional services environment, PEO or similar.
    • Proficiencyin Salesforce and ADP.
    • HR certification or HR degree.
Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is $66,000 – $75,000. Our salary ranges are based on national compensation benchmarks of similar sized companies in professional services. This position is eligible for an annual bonus at 5% of the annual salary.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, plus a flexible spending account and health savings account, in addition to a 401k with a company match, and commuter benefits.

We give generous paid time off, with 16 days of vacation time, 10 days of personal time, 20 hours of volunteer time, 11 company holidays, and 4 optional holidays.
