Job summary

Berkeley Lab’s NERSC division seeks a Network Engineer, Platform, Automation & HPC/AI to help engineer the high‑performance network platform powering national scientific computing. You will work at the intersection of network engineering, automation, and software development, shaping the 1 Tb/s border and 800G/400G data center backbone for the NERSC-9 and -10 systems and 10,000+ users.

The role spans Level 3 and Level 4 tracks, with responsibilities from implementing automation to leading

Qualifications

• Typically requires extensive IP networking experience in data center/LAN environments.
• Experience with network automation and/or performance optimization.
• Project management experience developing technical scope, schedule and budget.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills with peers, vendors, and customers.

Responsibilities

• Implement, operate, maintain, and improve network automation and observability solutions.
• Support Data Center modernization and Smart Facility initiatives.
• Design and deliver network services for emerging needs (e.g., AI/cloud edge).
• Monitor and optimize network performance, latency, throughput, and fault tolerance.
• Create and maintain network topology diagrams and documentation.
• Collaborate with Security to ensure data integrity and high availability.
