A Brief Job Description:

Job Summary:

The Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor will play a pivotal role in supporting individuals recovering from substance use disorders by providing educational and vocational counseling services. This position focuses on helping clients develop and achieve vocational rehabilitation goals, such as employment, skills training, or educational pursuits. By building and leveraging strong community linkages, the counselor will coordinate and provide pre-vocational and vocational activities that empower clients to achieve long-term success in competitive employment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Vocational Rehabilitation or a related field of rehabilitation psychology.
  • OR Master’s degree in counseling/psychology specialization with one year of experience in career counseling for clients with alcohol/substance abuse issues or other disadvantaged populations.
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, sociology, or a related field with a minimum of two years of experience in career counseling for clients with alcohol/substance abuse issues or other disadvantaged populations.
  • OR current Rehabilitation Counseling Master’s student supervised by a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC).
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assessment and Planning:
    • Administer, score, and interpret academic and vocational tests.
    • Collaborate with clinical and residential treatment staff to create individualized recovery and vocational service plans.
  • Counseling and Facilitation:
    • Provide vocational counseling to clients through individual and group sessions.
    • Facilitate vocational groups focused on psycho-educational activities to prepare clients for employment.
  • Community and Agency Collaboration:
    • Establish and maintain relationships with community vocational and educational agencies.
    • Coordinate referrals and attend case conferences with V.E.S.I.D. (Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities).
    • Act as a liaison to ensure continuous progress updates for clients receiving community-based services.
  • Documentation and Compliance:
    • Maintain client records in compliance with OASAS regulatory standards.
    • Submit monthly statistical reports on client participation in training and vocational activities.
    • Participate in the NYESS process as applicable.
  • Training and Development:
    • Participate in individual and group supervision and interdisciplinary team meetings.
    • Engage in professional development activities to stay updated on best practices in vocational rehabilitation.
  • Additional Duties:
    • Coordinate community service projects for clients.
    • Perform other duties as directed by the Departmental Supervisor.

  • Collaboration:Proven ability to work cooperatively with culturally diverse individuals, staff, and community service providers.
  • Behavioral Health Expertise:Strong knowledge of the local behavioral health system.

  • Technical Proficiency:Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and ability to manage documentation accurately and efficiently.
