Job summary

The Department of Public Safety in North Carolina seeks a Housing Unit Supervisor (S) for the 3rd shift at a juvenile facility in Pittsboro. You will oversee youth monitors, plan staff coverage, and ensure safety and security of youth, staff, and living units.

Required are an associate degree with three years of related experience or equivalent, plus a valid driver’s license. This full-time role offers a 12-hour night shift, on-call hours, weekends and holidays, with comprehensive state benefits.

Job Duties:
The primary purpose of this position is to provide for the overall safety and security of youth, staff, and facility during third shift. This position serves as a supervisor for all third shift youth monitors in planning and prepares a schedule for staff coverage and supervision in living units. While on duty, this supervisor monitors activities assigned to the shift assuring that all duties are performed as required; visits individual living units regularly; provides staff support and coverage; and crisis intervention if necessary. This supervisor responds to incoming visitors and telephone calls and notifies appropriate staff in case of emergency. In addition, this position conducts nightly shift review, updates staff about problems, and policies and procedures, provides mini training sessions, reviews and approves all written assignments completed by third shift youth monitors, prepares written reports and updates incoming Supervisors of third shift events

A valid driver’s license is required.

Salary Range: $34,270-$59,973

Please note: You must be physically capable of applying the proper methods and procedures to physically restrain juveniles and defend self after being properly training by the department. The physical demands for this position will be discussed during the interview.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position. This position is for 3rd shift, working 12-hour shifts. Candidates must be able to work on-call hours, weekends and holidays on a rotating basis and be able to work a variable work schedule to meet the needs of juveniles and their families.

Necessary Special Requirements Applicants for positions designated as Juvenile Justice Officers are subject to and must meet the hiring and training standards established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, as defined in Title 12, Chapter 9 of the NC Administrative Code, by the statutory authority of GS 17C.

Selected applicant must attend and successfully complete and pass the Juvenile Justice Officer Basic Training certification program. The certification requires three weeks to complete and is comprised of classroom and physically demanding training. This training is carried out at regional training centers and requires consecutive overnight stays. In addition, the selected candidate must:

Have or be able to obtain required documentation for certification as a Juvenile Justice Officer (i.e. a diploma).

Pass a Criminal Background check

Pass a Drug Screening test

Pass a Psychological test

Pass a Sexual Risk Screening test

Pass a Physical (to include Vision and Hearing)

Be a US citizen

Be at least 20 years of age
