Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center Environmental Management Services Division is seeking a Housekeeping Aid to perform both janitorial and custodial duties under the supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor.

Work includes floor maintenance, restroom cleaning, waste handling and equipment operation, with duties in patient areas and common spaces. Schedule includes Monday-Wednesday 3:30PM-12:00AM and Saturday-Sunday 7:00AM-3:30PM, with lifting and physical activity

Qualifications

• EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience in janitorial/custodial work.
• You will be evaluated per OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
• Volunteer work and varied experience can count toward qualification.

Responsibilities

• Performs floor maintenance, wall washing and cleaning of doors, frames, baseboards, corners and edges, and stairwells.
• Sweeps, dust mops, damp/mop floors, scrubs, strips, refinishs, buffs, vacuums and extracts carpets and runners, and performs spot cleaning.
• Operates pressure washers and heavy industrial equipment as needed and maintains equipment attachments.
• Empties trash, transports refuse and medical waste, and handles recycling.
• Cleans restrooms and showers, disinfects and deodorizes lavatories, urinals and sinks; replenishes supplies in dispensers.
• Moves and arranges furniture and patient beds; provides bed-making in patient care areas.
• Removes soiled textiles and restocks clean textiles; inventories textile closets.
• Defrosts and cleans patient care refrigerators and ice machines; cleans stainless steel surfaces and storage areas.
• Maintains windows, glass surfaces and replaces curtains/blinds; cleans needle boxes and non-critical reusable medical equipment as assigned.
• The position may supervise or guide a Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) worker and perform other duties as assigned.

• Adjusts - cleans - and performs minor maintenance on this equipment and changes attachments for their proper use in achieving the best results

• Transports general refuse - regulated medical waste and recycling to central collection areas
• Cleans rest rooms - bathrooms - and shower rooms - ensuring that they are cleaned and meet acceptable standards (cleans - disinfects - and deodorizes lavatories - showers - bathtubs - urinals - and toilet bowls

• Replenishes supplies of paper towels - toilet paper - hand sanitizers - and soap in all areas where dispensers are located

• Loads and unloads clean textiles from bulk carts
• Restocks clean textile closets - cabinets - shelves - carts - and participates in inventory management activities
• Defrosts and cleans patient care refrigerators and ice machines in nourishment kitchen areas
• cleans stainless steel on storage instrument cabinets and counters - elevators in lobbies - wards - diet-kitchens and nurse utility rooms
• and cleans ashtrays - smoke stands - sand urns in designated smoke areas 'and water fountains
• Provides interim cleaning of windows and window ledges from the inside - cleans glass door and other glass surfaces
• and replaces curtains and cleans blinds
• Cleans and/or replaces needle boxes
• Periodically cleans specific non-critical Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) in inpatient and clinicaf areas of the medical center
• Additionally - the position may work with and provide guidance to a Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) worker - and perform other duties as assigned
