Job summary

Washington College is seeking a reliable Housekeeper to clean classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas. You will follow a schedule, use cleaning chemicals and equipment, and maintain a safe, welcoming environment for students and staff.

The role requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, and comply with OSHA/EPA regulations. Weekend work or overtime may be required to meet service needs.

Responsibilities

  • Clean rooms, classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and other work areas.
  • Sweep, scrub, wax, and polish floors.
  • Use carpet cleaning equipment and vacuum furnishings.
  • Empty trash and transport waste to disposal areas.
  • Follow OSHA, EPA, and state regulations for cleaning chemicals.
  • Report needed repairs to Building & Grounds.
  • Wash interior and exterior windows as scheduled.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment with proper labeling.
  • Perform other related tasks to keep Washington College safe and clean.

Job description

Washington College is seeking qualified applicants for the Housekeeping position. Housekeeping provides a clean and safe facility and to project a pleasant, positive attitude. General cleaning services using a variety of specialized chemicals and equipment. Work from a schedule identifying specific areas and tasks to be completed for each shift. Hours of work may vary. May be asked to cover other areas in the event of a co-worker’s absence, or work additional hours, or on weekends if needed to meet service requirements.

Essential Functions
  • Cleans rooms, classrooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, corridors, elevators, stairways, locker rooms and other work area (water coolers/fountains and polish metal).
  • Sweeps, scrubs, waxes and polishes floor surfaces.
  • Utilizes powered carpet floor cleaning equipment to accomplish tasks. Cleans or vacuums rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and window coverings (blinds, etc.).
  • Empty and clean trash receptacles. Re‑line cans. Transport trash and waste to disposal areas.
  • Must handle various cleaning solvents, chemicals, etc. Must comply with all regulations such as OSHA, EPA, State Health Department, etc.
  • Report any needed repairs immediately to Building & Grounds (such as leaky faucets or toilets, loose tile, broken windowpanes, missing nuts or screws, beds needing repair, etc.).
  • Wash interior and exterior windows as scheduled. May be required to wash exterior windows with a telescoping window washing tool.
  • Keep an inventory of supplies and requisition replacements from the Housekeeping Manager in advance to ensure cleaning will not be hindered. Maintain all supplies and equipment in clean and orderly fashion with labels on all chemical containers.
  • Any other reasonably related task assigned by supervisor to, but not limited to, maintain a clean and safe environment for Washington College students, staff, faculty and visitors.
Physical Requirements

Physical requirements include the ability to bend, stoop, reach, kneel, climb, and walk. Must be able to lift/carry items weighing up to 50 lbs. Requires standing/walking for extended periods of time. Requires ability to operate motorized cleaning equipment and be able to lift heavy objects and move light furniture. Some overtime may be required. Vacation approval may be limited during peak activity periods.

Experience and Personal Characteristics

Ability to speak, read, write, and interpret instructions written or spoken in English. Basic math skills required to calculate square feet, chemical mixtures, wax and other chemicals coverage and other related products.

  • Cleaning chemicals. Uniforms, safety glasses, and gloves will be provided.
  • This job may occasionally require the housekeeper/custodian to perform tasks that can expose to blood or blood borne pathogens; training will be provided. Federal regulations requires that the employee be offered Hepatitis B vaccine within ten days of initial assignment and attend a training session prior to performing any exposure-prone tasks.
