Job summary

Northern California Behavioral Health System is seeking a House Supervisor to lead nursing operations for the NOC shift, ensuring safe, coordinated care and smooth hospital operations. You will supervise staff, oversee admissions/discharges, and monitor performance across clinical and operational teams to maintain high-quality patient flow.

You will coordinate with the CNO and Nursing leadership, review shift reports, and actively address urgent events and staffing needs to optimize patient care

Qualifications

  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in California.
  • Current BLS or obtained during initial orientation period.
  • Current Handle with Care or obtained during initial orientation period.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric diagnosis, medications, nursing process, treatment planning, and leadership.
  • BSN degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees admissions/discharges with A&R for timely assessments and inpatient admissions.
  • Oversees unit operations including MDTPs, logs, and Kardex accuracy.
  • Audits all seclusion or restraints interventions on assigned shift.
  • Monitors inventory of office, medical, and patient care supplies; requests replenishment as needed.
  • Alerts Administrator on Call for urgent/extreme events (AWOL, 911 transfers, injuries, incidents).
  • Compiles data for daily shift reports and forwards to CNO; reviews Shift Summary, Bed Control, Incident Reports.
  • Prepares and investigates Incident Reports; coordinates staff education to prevent recurrence.
  • Manages staffing levels with Staffing Coordinator; documents overtime.
  • Supervises nursing staff on shift; contributes to evaluations and staff development.
  • Supports orientation/education for clinical staff; updates on policies and regulations.
  • Ensures accurate shift-to-shift reports and monitors high-acuity patients.
  • Coordinates off-site tests, ER visits, admissions/discharges, labs, and audits.
  • Addresses and resolves patient/family complaints; liaises with Internal Patient Advocate.

WAGE SCALE: $57.00 - 71.96 per hour
SHIFTS AVAILABLE: NOC Shift
Position 1: Tue, Wed, Thu
Position 2: Thu, Fri, Sat
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Northern California Behavioral Health System is a behavioral healthcare organization focused on compassionate inpatient mental health services. In this role, you will provide nursing leadership that helps keep hospital operations running smoothly while supporting safe, responsive, and coordinated care. This position is central to communication across nursing, clinical, and operational teams, with a direct impact on patient flow, staffing oversight, and the overall quality of care delivered across the hospital.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Works closely with Assessment and Referrals (A&R) to provide oversight of admissions and discharges. This includes timely assessments and inpatient admissions.
  • Oversees unit operations including (and not limited to) timely completion and review of multidisciplinary treatment plans (MDTP), checking logs (refrigerator, emergency cart log, POC testing, legal tracking logs) and accuracy of patient Kardex.
  • Audits all seclusion or restraints interventions on assigned shift.
  • Monitors inventory of office, medical, and patient care supplies. Requests replenishment of supplies as needed.
  • Alerts the Administrator on Call (AOC) when urgent or extreme events occur. Examples include, but are not limited to, AWOL patients, 911 or urgent ambulance transfers, patient injuries, staff injuries, and incidents involving law enforcement.
  • Gathers and compiles data for daily shift and routine reporting. Prepares shift report and review with oncoming Nurse Manager or House Charge and forward copy to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). Routine reports include Shift Summary, Bed Control, and Incident Reports.
  • Prepares and investigates Incident Reports (IR) in an accurate and timely fashion; follows up with staff education to prevent reoccurring incidents.
  • Maintains a clutter free working environment.
  • Oversees staff assignments to prevent unnecessary overtime and ensure appropriate staffing levels based on census and acuity assessments. Manages appropriate staffing levels in conjunction with Staffing Coordinator. Reports any staffing concerns to Nurse Manager (NM) or AOC. Documents approved overtime on employee time adjustment forms.
  • Directly supervises nursing staff on assigned shift. Provides staff feedback on performance. Contributes to formal introductory and annual employee evaluations as prepared by the Director of Nursing or Nurse Managers.
  • Supports the CNO, Director of Nursing, Nurse Manager, and RNs to provide a high-quality orientation and ongoing education for clinical staff. Continually educates staff on key issues relating to hospital policies and procedures and health care regulations.
  • Ensure accurate and timely shift-to-shift reports.
  • Monitor clinical issues for high acuity patients or patients with unusual problems.
  • Coordinate off site tests, emergency room visits, admission and discharges, lab processes, work orders and audits.
  • Address and resolve patient and family complaints. Proactively work with NM when a complaint becomes a potential grievance and alert the hospital’s Internal Patient Advocate.
Education/Licensure
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • Current BLS or obtained during initial orientation period.
  • Current Handle with Care or obtained during initial orientation period.
  • Knowledge and experience of psychiatric diagnosis and associated risks, medications, biological systems, nursing process, treatment planning, and leadership.
  • BSN degree preferred.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

The House Supervisor completes all required initial and annual competencies, including suicide prevention, de‑escalation, safe restraint use, medication safety, code blue response, infection prevention, and the appropriate use of seclusion and restraints. The role also requires advanced competencies in patient care management, staffing systems, and internal reporting.

The House Supervisor maintains expert knowledge of hospital policies, procedures, unit operations, and regulatory requirements, and provides staff education as needed. This position requires not only demonstrated competency, but consistent, skilled application of that knowledge in daily nursing practice.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • While performing the duties of this job, this position is frequently required to do the following:
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and stand for sustained period of time.
  • Walk, push, pull, lift, carry objects from a lower to higher position or horizontally from position to position or otherwise move objects.
  • Feel sizes, shapes, temperatures, and textures by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips.
  • Express or exchange ideas orally and potentially loudly, accurately, or quickly.
  • Perceive the nature of sound with no less than a 40 db loss @ 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz with or without correction.
  • Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
  • Able to provide manual and mechanical restraints for patients who are physically acting out and are potentially dangerous (at times this occurs on the floor)
  • Minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction.
  • While worker may possibly be subjected to temperature changes, the worker is generally not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions as the work is predominantly inside.
