Job description

Job Summary

This role collects and analyzes data on patient admissions, transfers, and bed availability in specified clinical areas to improve patient care and maximize bed utilization. The individual ensures that patients are admitted to the most appropriate level of care and bed assignment using admission criteria, acts as a liaison for physicians, nursing leadership, unit staff, care management staff, and other stakeholders to ensure efficient operations. In the absence of the Chief Nursing Officer, the individual acts as the Administrator on Duty, providing administrative decisions, direction, and supervision for all hospital departments.

Job Type

Per Diem, variable shifts and days of the week.

Compensation

15% per diem differential to base wage in lieu of benefits.

Position Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred. Current Washington State RN Licensure.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of acute‑care clinical nursing experience.
  • Experience in a variety of acute‑care nursing departments preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of Case Management and Utilization Review processes, including InterQual and acute‑care patient status regulations and guidelines.
  • Advanced knowledge of electronic medical record systems and Case Management Systems.
  • Understanding of quality processes and Medicare.
  • Initiative, creativity, and outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to find creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Strong bed management operations background.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and overall computer literacy.
  • Competency with equipment listed on department‑specific checklist.
  • Critical thinking skills: Seeks resources for direction when necessary, performs independent problem solving, and makes logical decision‑making.
  • Demonstrates accountability, safe judgment, and adherence to legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Competency in caring for patients across the age continuum.
  • Certification in ACLS, BLS, TNCC and PALS preferred.
Essential Functions
  • Coordinated bed management program to accept, coordinate, and assign bed placement requests using the Patient Placement Matrix.
  • Maintained real‑time knowledge of pending discharges, transfers, current admit requests, and bed availability through communication with nursing leadership and unit staff.
  • Evaluated ED and direct admit requests against InterQual criteria, discussed concerns with physicians, and suggested alternatives.
  • Collaborated with nursing leadership and unit staff to resolve delays, facilitate patient flow and bed utilization.
  • Applied clinical knowledge of disease entities and circumstances affecting patient placement.
  • Determined appropriate equipment or medications for each nursing unit using hospital references.
  • Communicated with admitting physicians regarding bed requests, assignment status, and admission progress.
  • Educated physicians regarding documentation supporting patient admission.
  • Communicated with staffing coordinators and nursing leadership to ensure safe and adequate staffing for admissions.
  • Collaborated with the Care Management Department to identify and recommend appropriate discharges and adopted direction from the Director of Care Transitions.
  • Served as backup for the Director of Care.
  • Functioned as liaison between stakeholder groups to ensure operational efficiencies in patient placement and bed control.
  • Acted as Administrator on Complete projects assigned by the Chief of Patient Care Services.
  • Prepared monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on placement issues, trends, and data findings.
  • Participated in hospital‑wide quality improvement programs, analyzing placement trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Attended team meetings to provide input and receive feedback on relevant issues.
  • Assisted in arrangements for new admissions and discharges to/from units.
  • Coordinated admissions to nursing and activities with mortuaries and medical examiner.
Physical Requirements
  • Occasional or prolonged standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Manual dexterity with light physical effort and ability to lift/carry up to 20 lbs.
  • Good reading eyesight.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for interaction with physicians, nurses, health‑care professionals, patients, families, and the public.
