Job summary

WH Wheeling Hospital Inc. seeks a House Supervisor to oversee 24/7 patient flow, bed management, and staff coordination in a fast-paced hospital setting. You will coordinate transfers, supervise nursing teams, and participate in performance improvement initiatives to maintain high-quality patient care.

The role requires WV RN licensure, BLS within 30 days, and at least five years of hospital nursing experience, with preferred specialty certification in nursing administration.

Qualifications

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in West Virginia.
  • BLS certification within 30 days of hire date.
  • Five years nursing experience, hospital setting preferred.
  • Specialty certification in nursing administration or related specialty preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Make administrative decisions using available data for complex, hospital-wide issues.
  • Initiate actions in emergencies and keep the House Supervisor informed.
  • Manage public relations matters regarding media inquiries about patients and events.
  • Assist staff to resolve problems impacting patient care; coordinate with department director.
  • Provide bed status updates to ED, Med-Com, and MARS for expeditious transfers.
  • Assess bed availability and determine transfer status; coordinate transfers from outside facilities.
  • Assess unit activity; discuss staffing with the Charge Nurse.
  • Assist in resolving staff performance or behavioral issues with leadership guidance.
  • Receive reports affecting staffing needs and plan accordingly.
  • Assign Resource Pool and Per Diem staff to meet needs.
  • Arrange staffing with Manager; reassign staff as needed.
  • Collaborate with housekeeping, transport, and other ops to maximize throughput.
  • Demonstrate clinical nursing expertise and consult as needed.
  • Negotiate decisions professionally with physicians and staff.
  • Conduct patient rounding and support service recovery promptly.
  • Respond to emergency pages; plan transfers and family support as required.
  • Work with House Supervisor to complete fitness-for-duty requirements.
  • Participate in Quality/Performance Improvement activities.

Consistently provides current bed status of all units and patients to the Emergency Department physician, Med-Com, and MARS so that patients can be accepted for transfer as expeditiously as possible.6. Assessment of bed availability and/or direct admissions to determine transfer status, Coordinates transfers from outside facilities and Emergency Department using clinical expertise for patient placement.7. Assesses the unit’s activity level during rounds. Confers with the unit Charge Nurse regarding unusual patient care situations or other concerns voiced.8. Assists the Charge Nurse in resolving complex problems related to staff performance, inappropriate behaviors or other problems involving patients, visitors, or staff.9. Receives report defining the unit activities that may impact house wide staffing needs and makes preliminary staffing plans as appropriate.10. Assigns Resource Pool and Per Diem staff to best meet staffing needs.11. Assists the Manager or designee in arranging appropriate staffing, such as calling in additional unit staff or enforcing Staffing Adjustment Guidelines. Assesses the need for re-assignment of staff and makes those re-assignments.12. Collaborates with operational support departments (housekeeping, transport, etc.) to maximize patient throughput.13. Displays expertise when assisting with clinical nursing issues and consults with other professionals as the need arises.14. Negotiates decisions with physician, visitors, staff and others in a professional manner that staff can emulate.15. Conducts patient rounding and facilitates service recovery in a timely manner.16. Responds to emergency pages, assesses the need for additional help, coordinates plan for patient transfer, if necessary, and ensures family support.17. Works in conjunction with House Supervisor to complete fitness for duty requirements.18.
