Job summary

PAQ, Inc. is hiring a Hot Deli Combo Clerk to support the Hot Deli Lead in delivering great customer service and meeting department goals. You will prepare, package, and serve a variety of prepared foods, operate the POS, and help maintain cleanliness and food safety standards.

This role requires strong communication, basic math, and the ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment. Full-time, on-site at our California location; weekend/evening availability is required.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: No prior experience required; on-the-job training is provided.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Responsibilities

  • Provide friendly and helpful customer service, including handling difficult situations and resolving customer concerns, with supervisor assistance as needed.
  • Follow approved procedures for receiving, pricing, and stocking products to ensure accuracy, quality, and proper rotation.
  • Prepare, package, and serve a variety of prepared foods.
  • Maintain a clean, attractive, and friendly department to ensure a positive image for customers.
  • Maintain inventory control to ensure freshness, product quality, and turnover, minimizing out-of-stock or overstocked items.
  • Handle damaged and spoiled products according to company policy to control the level of damaged goods.
  • Maintain clean and organized eating, serving, food preparation areas, and utensils and equipment, ensuring following sanitation, health, and safety standards.
  • Ensure quality standards by following the FIFO (First In, First Out) methodology.
  • Follow strict sanitation and food safety guidelines to maintain a clean and hygienic cooking environment.
  • Perform Cook I and other duties as assigned.

The Hot Deli Combo Clerk supports the Hot Deli Lead in meeting the department's sales and profit goals and contributes to a positive customer shopping experience by upholding quality standards. Hot Deli Combo Clerks are vital to store operations, often serving as the point of contact for customers. The Hot Deli Combo Clerk also assists with hot deli duties and responsibilities as needed.

Essential Functions of the Position

Knowledge

Proficiency in basic math and cash handling procedures. Understanding of customer service best practices and strategies to enhance customer engagement. Knowledge of proper food handling, storage, and sanitation procedures to ensure food safety.

Skills

Strong communication skills to interact effectively with customers and team members. Ability to operate POS systems and other cashier equipment. Attention to detail to ensure accuracy in transactions and handling of cash. Basic computer skills for operating the POS system.

Abilities

Ability to adapt to changing situations, manage multiple demands, and work effectively with diverse personalities. Aptitude for making informed decisions quickly, often in high-pressure environments.

Physical Requirements

Stand and walk for extended periods, typically 8-hour shifts. Lift and carry items up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Perform repetitive motions such as reaching, bending, stooping, squatting, and handling products. Exhibit manual dexterity for handling money and operating POS systems, including 10-key adding machines and self-checkout (SCO) systems. Utilize cash handling tools, including counterfeit bill detection pens and equipment. Working in a hot environment due to fryers, stoves, ovens, and other cooking equipment. Ability to tolerate variations in temperature and handle hot items safely. Good vision to ensure the quality and appearance of dishes and read labels. Maintain clear communication with customers and team members. Move quickly and efficiently to assist customers and manage workload. Maintain physical stamina to work in a fast-paced environment.

Work Conditions

Work Hours: Vary, with availability required on weekends, evenings, and holidays; typically, 8-hour shifts for full-time employees.

Environment: Indoor, climate-controlled with adequate lighting and ventilation. Exposure to hot temperatures from fryers, stoves, ovens, and warmers, as well as cooler temperatures in refrigerated areas and freezers.

Exposure: May be exposed to moving mechanical parts. Exposure to hot, wet, damp, and slippery conditions. Exposure to cleaning chemicals.

Noise Level: Working in an environment with moderate to high noise levels from mixers, ovens, and other cooking equipment.

Interaction: Constant interaction with customers and team members in a fast-paced retail environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: No prior experience is required; on-the-job training is provided. Previous retail or customer service experience is a plus. Must be 18 years of age or older.
