Job summary

Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is seeking a PRN Advanced Practice Provider to support Hospital Medicine services across multiple locations in the Wake Region. This position offers flexible staffing support to ensure continuity of patient care while delivering high-quality inpatient services.

The ideal candidate will be an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with the ability to work independently in fast-paced settings. Competitive compensation and various benefits are included for eligible staff.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
• NPs must hold a Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Nursing Practice.
• PAs must have certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Responsibilities

• Perform initial and follow-up medical histories and physical examinations.
• Conduct daily inpatient assessments and ongoing patient management.
• Document all patient encounters accurately and timely.

Job description

Position Overview

PRN Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA) supporting Hospital Medicine services across Wake Region. Reports directly to the APP Manager. Provides coverage for PTO, FMLA, illness call-outs, and periods of high patient census across multiple Wake Region Hospital Medicine locations.

Schedule and Availability

Schedules are developed every three months in collaboration with the APP Manager and scheduling team. Shift assignments may include day and swing shifts. PRN APPs assigned to a swing shift will not be scheduled for a day shift the following day. Schedule changes may occur to accommodate unexpected call-outs, emergencies, or changes in patient census, with notice provided no later than 6:00 p.m. the day before whenever feasible. Every effort will be made to minimize the number of different services and hospital locations worked within the same week and to provide continuity of patient care assignments.

Hospital Locations

• Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center - Winston Salem
• Davie Medical Center - Bermuda Run
• High Point Medical Center - High Point
• Lexington Medical Center - Lexington
• Wilkes Medical Center - North Wilkesboro

PRN APPs assigned to Wilkes Medical Center will receive a $100 shift incentive for eligible shifts.

Compensation

• Base compensation listed within the pay range based on qualifications, skills, and relevant experience.
• Premium pay such as shift, on-call, and more.
• Incentive pay for select positions.
• Opportunity for annual increases based on performance.

Schedule Pay Range

$51.05 - $76.60 per shift.

Experience Required

• Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
• NPs must hold a Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Nursing Practice with Acute Care NP or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP board certification.
• PAs must hold certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants; CAQ preferred.
• Current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in North Carolina.
• Current prescriptive privileges and DEA registration.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers through the American Heart Association, valid at least 90 days beyond start date.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast‑paced inpatient environment.
• Strong clinical judgment, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
• Flexibility to work across multiple hospital locations and adapt to varying patient care needs.

Job Summary

Specialty Care Advanced Practice Providers deliver concentrated services within a designated specialty, caring for both acute and chronically ill patients. The PRN Hospital Medicine APP delivers comprehensive inpatient care while providing flexible staffing support across Wake Region Hospital Medicine locations to ensure continuity of care and operational excellence.

Essential Functions

• Perform initial and follow-up medical histories and physical examinations.
• Conduct daily inpatient assessments and ongoing patient management.
• Evaluate, admit, consult, and manage hospitalized adult medicine patients.
• Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with supervising physicians.
• Order, interpret, and manage laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies.
• Prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions within scope of practice.
• Perform minor medical procedures as appropriate and within credentialing guidelines.
• Coordinate care with physicians, nursing, pharmacy, case management, specialists, and ancillary departments.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and discharge planning activities.
• Document all patient encounters, assessments, procedures, and treatment plans accurately and timely in the electronic medical record.
• Serve as a patient advocate while promoting quality, safety, and evidence-based care.
• Adapt quickly to varying practice locations, provider teams, and patient care environments while maintaining high standards of clinical excellence.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
• Must be able to lift and support up to 35 pounds while assisting with patients, medical equipment, and supplies.
• Must possess intact senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and finger dexterity.
• Must communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Must be able to perform effectively in stressful clinical situations.
• Must be flexible to work varying schedules, including day and swing shifts, weekends, and holidays based on departmental needs.
