Job summary

UT Health San Antonio is seeking an entry-level Hospital - Clinical Lab Assistant to perform phlebotomy, process specimens, and support pre-analytic tasks in a clinical laboratory setting on-site in San Antonio, TX.

Under close supervision, you will collect blood samples, accession specimens into the LIS, prepare and aliquot specimens, monitor supplies, and assist with QA, safety, and equipment setup while providing information to clients and healthcare professionals.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 1 year of phlebotomy and specimen processing in a clinical laboratory.
• Certified phlebotomy program completing is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture to collect blood.
• Receive and accession specimens into the LIS.
• Prepare and aliquot specimens for laboratory tests per protocols.
• Monitor inventory levels of laboratory supplies.
• Provide information on specimen collection, test requisitions, and lab procedures.
• Address inquiries and escalate complex issues as needed.
• Ensure compliance with quality control and QA measures.
• Assist in preparation and setup of laboratory equipment.
• Ensure proper handling and transportation of specimens.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description

Under close supervision, performs phlebotomy, processes specimens, handles client inquiries, conducts waived testing, and contributes to pre-analytic laboratory tasks.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture to collect blood specimens from patients.
• Receives and accessions specimens into the laboratory information system (LIS).
• Prepares and aliquots specimens for various laboratory tests according to established protocols.
• Monitors and maintains appropriate inventory levels of laboratory supplies.
• Provides information regarding specimen collection, test requisitions, and laboratory procedures.
• Addresses inquiries and concerns; escalates complex issues to the appropriate personnel.
• Ensures compliance with all applicable quality control and quality assurance measures.
• Assists in the preparation and setup of laboratory equipment and instruments.
• Ensures the proper handling and transportation of specimens within the laboratory.
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Ability to answer incoming calls from clients, healthcare professionals, and patients.
• Knowledge on how to label, document, and prepare collected specimens for transport to the laboratory.
• Ability to verify the accuracy of patient information and specimen labeling.
• Knowledge of recording and maintaining accurate documentation of waived test results.
• Ability to collaborate with laboratory staff to maintain a clean and organized work environment.
• Knowledge of relevant laboratory safety and infection control protocols.
• Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) is an asset.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

EDUCATION:

• High school diploma or GED is required.

PREFERRED:

• Completion of a certified phlebotomy program is preferred.
• Inpatient/hospital setting experience is preferred.

Required Skills

• 1 year of experience in phlebotomy and specimen processing within a clinical laboratory setting.
