Job summary

Fox Valley Park District is seeking a Horticulture & Natural Areas Supervisor to lead care of floral displays and decorative landscaping across multiple park sites in Aurora, IL. The role involves supervising staff, coordinating maintenance, and contributing to garden design and bed layouts.

Based at the Greenhouse facility in Aurora, the position requires a BS in horticulture or equivalent experience, pesticide licenses, and strong computer skills.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Horticulture or related degree or five years working experience.
  • Organizational and supervisory skills with knowledge and experience in grounds maintenance.
  • Knowledge and experience with plant material, soil analysis, propagation, and all phases of horticulture.
  • Ability to obtain Illinois Pesticide Licenses in General Standards (Operator's License) and an Applicator's License in Plant Management and Ornamentals.
  • Must have a valid Illinois State Driver's License.
  • Strong computer skills related to park operations (spreadsheets, word processing, timekeeping, budgeting, work orders, HR, MS and other software).

Responsibilities

  • Care and maintenance of assigned indoor and outdoor floral displays and ornamental landscaping and special features across District facilities and parks.
  • Assist in design, layout, construction, and maintenance of floral beds and gardens throughout the District.
  • Supervise and organize full-time and seasonal personnel; maintain vehicles and equipment assigned to this area.
  • Commit to best practices and suggest improvements; work hours may include evenings and weekends on a rotation; at-will position.

QUALIFICATIONS
B.S. in Horticulture or related degree or five (5) years working experience. Organizational and supervisory skills with knowledge and experience in grounds maintenance required. Knowledge and experience with plant material, soil analysis, propagation, and all phases of horticulture. The ability to obtain Illinois Pesticide Licenses in the categories of General Standards (Operator's License), an Applicator's License in Plant Management and Ornamentals are required. Must be able to perform manual tasks in various weather conditions including high heat and humidity. A valid Illinois State Driver's License is also required. Must have strong computer skills as it relates to park operations such as: creating and maintaining spreadsheets and word documents, and managing time keeping, budgeting, work orders, HR, MS and other pertinent software as deemed necessary.

DUTIES
Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Operations, the Horticulture and Natural Areas Supervisor is responsible for the care and maintenance of assigned indoor and outdoor floral displays and ornamental landscaping and special features attached to various facility and park locations throughout the District. In addition, the Horticulture and Natural Areas Supervisor will also assist in the design, layout, construction, and maintenance of all floral beds and gardens throughout the District. The Horticultural Supervisor will also supervise and organize full-time, and seasonal personnel and maintain vehicles and equipment that are assigned to this area. They will perform these duties to the best of their abilities and offer suggestions of better ways to accomplish jobs and be ever mindful of the best interests of the Fox Valley Park District and of fellow employees. Some evening and weekend hours will be required on a rotational basis. This is an at-will position.
