Job summary

Capital Health System, Inc. is seeking a Histotechnologist to perform routine processing, microtomy, staining, and immunohistochemistry for pathologic diagnosis. Training provided for grossing and simple procedures as needed.

Requirements include an associate degree (bachelor's preferred) and HT/ASCP certification or within one year of employment. Prior histology experience is preferred; strong attention to detail is essential.

Position Overview

SUMMARY (Basic Purpose of the Job) Performs routine processing, microtomy and staining of surgical and cytology specimens for the purpose of pathologic diagnosis, special procedures and immunohistochemistry. Prepares specimens for analysis, performs testing procedures and documents appropriately in generating accurate and reliable test results. May perform simple gross AP with training and competency.

Minimum Requirements

• Education: Associate's degree required. Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, laboratory, or related field preferred.


• American Society for Clinical Pathology Histotechnican or Histotechnologist (HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP)) certification required or within one year of employment.


• Experience: One year experience as a Histotechnologist in a clinical setting preferred. 10 years of experience in histology required in lieu of Bachelor's degree.

Other Credentials

Knowledge and Skills: Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Special Training: Familiarity with personal computers. Some training in histology. Mental, Behavioral and Emotional Abilities: Possesses strong attention to detail. Has ability to prioritize tasks.

Essential Functions

Prepares for all phases of routine surgical pathology specimens for microscopic diagnosis, including processing, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining and frozen sectioning and simple tissue grossing. Determines the adequacy of routine and special stains including immunohistochemical stains according to departmental protocols. Receives, accessions and prepares cytopathology specimens for processing. Participates in continuing education, in-services and departmental programs as required. Performs a variety of special histochemical and immunohistochemical stains according to departmental protocol. Keeps manual and/or computerized records accurate and current for quality control and equipment maintenance. Performs routine maintenance on equipment as recommended by the manufacturer. Troubleshoots problems independently. Advises supervisor timely of equipment problems. Performs appropriate procedures accurately and completely following established infection control practices and adhering to established standards and practices for quality assurance. Follows departmental policies and procedures in accordance with established laboratory practice and policy, regulatory guidelines, performance standards, quality assurance and staff practices. Advises supervisor of supply needs and reagents out-dates. Performs departmental inventory as required. Performs other duties as assigned.
