Job summary

The University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore is seeking a Histotechnician to process surgical specimens, embed tissue, and prepare quality slides under supervision. You will accession specimens, perform staining, and assist with QC and equipment maintenance in a busy lab.

Preferred qualifications include an NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician program, biology and chemistry coursework for an associate degree, and HT/HTL ASCP certification or eligibility.

Qualifications

  • NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program completed within the last five years.
  • Associate's Degree with biology and chemistry coursework.
  • HT/HTL (ASCP) certification or eligibility preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Process surgical specimens by loading, unloading and programming the tissue processors.
  • Embed tissue samples according to department protocols with proper orientation.
  • Prepare quality slides following microtomy protocols.
  • Perform routine H&E and Special Staining, automated and manual.
  • Accurately accession specimens into Laboratory Information System.
  • Perform frozen sections as needed.
  • Maintain and operate tissue processors, stainers, coverslippers, microtomes, computers and printers.
  • Complete microscopic quality control review of slides.
  • Assist in training new team members and students as needed.

Primary Responsibilities
  • The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed.
  • Processes surgical specimens by loading, unloading and programming the tissue processors.
  • Embeds tissue samples according to department specific protocols with proper orientation.
  • Prepares quality slides following departmental microtomy protocols.
  • Performs routine H&E and Special Staining, performed both automated and manually.
  • Accurately accessions specimens into Laboratory Information System.
  • Performs frozen sections as needed.
  • Uses and maintains laboratory equipment, not limited to, but including: tissue processors, stainers, coverslippers, microtomes, computers and printers.
  • Completes microscopic quality control review of slides.
  • Performs ancillary tasks such as filing, cleaning and maintaining inventory of supplies.
  • Monitors pending work, resolves specimen issues and trouble shoots laboratory equipment.
  • Maintains equipment and temperature quality control logs.
  • Assists in training new team members and students as needed.
  • Prepares cases for send out to reference labs for specialized testing.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience - Required
  • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program within the last five years.
  • An Associate's Degree with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate's degree.
Education & Experience - Preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience as a histotechnician or histology lab assistant is preferred.
  • Has basic knowledge of theory and concept of immunohistochemistry.
  • HT/HTL (ASCP) certificate or eligible for certification preferred.
