Job summary

Tempus AI, Inc. is seeking a Histology Technician to prepare unstained and stained slides from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks and to cut frozen sections for review by pathologists.

You will work with a range of histology instruments, maintain specimen integrity, collaborate with pathologists and lab coordinators, and track work in the LIMS while meeting daily cutting and staining deadlines.

Qualifications

  • ASCP HT or HTL required.
  • College degree required – Associates or Bachelor's degrees.
  • Previous histology experience required.
  • Knowledge of CAP regulations.
  • Experience with pathology laboratory SOPs and protocols.
  • Comfort with laboratory safety and training.
  • Demonstrates problem solving skills in the laboratory.
  • Good communication and organization skills.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of slides from FFPE tissue blocks using microtome, water bath, automated stainer, automated coverslipper, tissue processors, and embedding centers.
  • Determine block orientation and knife angles to obtain representative sections.
  • Maintain specimen integrity and proper sample identification.
  • Cut frozen sections using a cryostat and stain for pathologist review.
  • Collaborate with pathologists and lab coordinators for slide quality review.
  • Track work in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Maintain equipment and record maintenance; troubleshoot when needed.
  • Follow safety requirements and ensure safe laboratory practices.
  • Perform routine workflows with minimal guidance and update SOPs as needed.
  • Produce quality finished products and meet daily cutting/staining deadlines.
  • Communicate workflow needs to other team members and report issues promptly.

Job description

What You’ll Do
  • Preparation of both unstained and routine hematoxylin and eosin stained slides from formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue blocks using a microtome, water bath, automated stainer, automated coverslipper, tissue processors, and embedding centers.
  • Determine appropriate block orientation and alignment, knife angles, and settings to obtain representative sections.
  • Maintain specimen integrity through proper identification of samples, slides and folders.
  • Cut frozen sections using a cryostat, stain samples for pathologists to review.
  • Collaborate with in-house pathologists and pathology lab coordinators for slide quality review.
  • Track work completed using a custom Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and record maintenance regularly, authorized to troubleshoot when necessary.
  • Approach work with safety and diligence and follow safety requirements of the laboratory.
  • Perform routine workflows without direct guidance, evaluate workflows and make adjustments to SOPs to capture those processes.
  • Reliably produce quality finished products.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Histology team to accomplish daily cutting and staining deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively with pathologists, members of the histology team, and other associated teams as relates to workflow needs.
  • Notify the lead, supervisor, and/or manager when problems or mistakes arise, may implement fixes with authorization and under direction, and record issues in the incident management system.
  • Report issues with instrumentation, samples, or the lab itself in a timely manner.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ASCP HT or HTL required.

Illinois Pay: $36.50/hour. The expected salary range above is applicable if the role is performed from Illinois and may vary for other locations (California, Colorado, New York). Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience.
