Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have completed on the job histology training or documented formal histology training.
  • ASCP Registration as a Histology Technician; or two years of training in histologic and cytologic techniques under the direction of a pathologist.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working in a histology lab, performing microtomy and/or embedding.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Performs related special staining techniques, which may include immunohistochemical, immunoflourescent and enzymehistochemical stains.
  • Operates computerized equipment for processing and staining of specimens.
  • Uses laboratory computer system to add, cancel and verify completed orders.
  • Performs and documents quality control and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Performs troubleshooting of instruments, processing and staining processes.
  • Places engineering and biomed service requests as needed.
  • Prepares stock and working reagents and maintains an adequate supply.
  • Performs specimen receiving and processing and answers the telephone and greets guests to the department.
  • Regularly reports all unacceptable quality control and instrument failures to a senior technologist, pathology coordinator, manager and/or Pathologist and documents discrepancies and their resolutions.
  • Assumes one or more of the following responsibilities: outside facility frozen section room maintenance, projects, teaching, tech in charge, reagent validations and evaluation of new technology.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Other Related Functions
  • Responsible for maintaining an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program including performance and evaluation of key quality indicators.
  • Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agencies requirements.
  • Practices infection control and safety policies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental records.
Qualifications

Education/Training

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have completed on the job histology training or documented formal histology training.

Licensure/Certification

  • ASCP Registration as a Histology Technician; or a preferred minimum of two years of training in histologic and cytologic techniques under the direction of a pathologist.
  • Maintains appropriate continuing education for certification if appropriate.

Experience

  • Minimum of two years’ experience working in a histology lab, performing microtomy and/or embedding is required
