Job summary

VIZIA Diagnostics, Alpharetta, GA, seeks a Histotechnician to support GI-focused surgical pathology. You will embed, section, stain, and QC tissue slides for pathologists in a fast-paced lab.

Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university and 3+ years of experience, completion of an accredited Histology Program or an equivalent combination of education and 5 years’ experience required
  • HT(ASCP) certification is required
  • HTL (ASCP) certification, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Capable of labeling specimen components (jars, cassettes, slides) per SOP
  • Embed formalin-fixed tissues according to SOP tissue orientation protocols
  • Perform microtomy of FFPE in accordance to SOP protocols
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of instruments and document findings
  • Maintain a clean working environment and inventory
  • Prepare reagents and stains according to proper specifications
  • Verify slide stain quality prior to pathologist distribution
  • Assist Histology Supervisor pathologist with duties as needed

VIZIA Diagnostics, formerly Boston Scientific Pathology, is seeking a Histotechnician for their Alpharetta, GA Laboratory.

VIZIA Diagnostics is a stand-alone, surgical pathology laboratory serving clients nationwide. VIZIA delivers best-in-class service excellence in diagnostic patient care.

Today, VIZIA is a subspecialty model dedicated primarily to the practice of gastrointestinal pathology with GI subspecialty-trained and experienced pathologists and histotechnicians focused exclusively on GI specimens to ensure the highest level of quality. VIZIA is a growing company with potential advancement into other surgical pathology specialties, including a more robust genitourinary practice.

Responsibilities
  • Capable of utilizing a Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Properly label Specimens components (jars, cassettes, slides, etc.) in accordance to laboratory procedures.
  • Embed formalin fixed tissues in accordance to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) tissue orientation protocols.
  • Perform microtomy of formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) in accordance to SOP protocols.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of instruments and document findings.
  • Maintain a clean working environment.
  • Maintain working inventory required for histological processes.
  • Prepare reagents, including stains solutions, graded alcohols and bulk reagents according to proper specifications.
  • Knowledgeable of laboratory instrumentation use (microtome, stainers, processors, etc.).
  • Perform more complex procedures for processing and staining tissues, including special stains (SS), and other special requests as assigned.
  • Verify slide stain quality prior to pathologist distribution.
  • Ensure that all stained slides are distributed to pathologists in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Perform and document equipment quality control and preventive maintenance.
  • Capable of grossing small biopsies, if applicable.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting skills.
  • Support Histology Management by communication supply needs. Document receipt of supplies and the date reagents are put in use.
  • Practice good documentation practice.
  • Troubleshoots with supervision.
  • Maintain filing systems to include FFPE tissue blocks, prepared slides and related documents.
  • Enforce proper chemical hygiene practices to ensure a safe and compliant working environment.
  • Perform chemical hazardous waste disposal in accordance to regulatory guidelines.
  • Assist in duties as deemed necessary by the Histology Supervisor, Pathology Manager, or Medical Director.
  • Comply with quality control policies and SOPs to ensure all aspects of laboratory operation are performed in accordance with accepted standards and applicable laws for clinical laboratories.

Job Scope:

Knowledge - Solid knowledge of the job. Applies broad knowledge of general technical concepts and practices and a general understanding of product or systems fundamentals.

Cognitive Skills - Performs routine and some non-routine technical assignments using standard methods and sequences. Performs set-up, testing, repair, inspection, and/or maintenance of all area-specific equipment, materials, systems, and/or product. Assignments require limited judgment in troubleshooting proven processes.

Supervision Required - Close to moderate supervision. Receives general instructions on routine work and detailed instructions on new assignments.

Consequence of Errors - Errors may be detected and corrected but may cause moderate loss of time or customer/user dissatisfaction.

Contacts - Contacts are typically with individuals within own department and occasionally with contacts outside own organization. Contacts involve obtaining or providing information or data requiring some explanation or interpretation.
