Job summary

St. Elizabeth HealthCare in Kentucky seeks a Histotechnologist to prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for diagnostic microscopic examination. The role requires meticulous care, respect, and empathy in every patient encounter.

Responsibilities include using HIS & LIS systems to review tests, perform tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and slide preparation; maintaining QC records; and supporting ongoing quality improvement through ICARE principles.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of clinical laboratory experience and at least 6 months of Anatomic Pathology experience.
  • ASCP Registered Histotechnician credential required.
  • 60 semester hours including biology and chemistry recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Use HIS & LIS computer systems to review ordered tests, order/cancel tests, document QC, and track specimens.
  • Performs routine histology duties including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and slide staining/cover slipping.
  • Files and retrieves paraffin blocks and prepares blocks/slides for send-out.
  • Keeps records of preventive maintenance and quality control to meet QA standards.
  • Participates in continuing education and in-service training to promote quality patient care.
  • Implements ICARE principles using communication skills and human relations.

Job Summary:

Job Description:

  • Performs routine histology duties including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and slide staining/cover slipping.
  • Files and retrieves paraffin embedded blocks. Performs recut procedures as directed. Prepares blocks/slides for send-out.
  • Keeps records of preventive maintenance on equipment and quality control to meet the organization’s continuing quality improvement standards.
  • Enhances professional growth and development of self, department staff, other hospital personnel, community, and students by participation in continuing education, and in-service training and the School of Medical Technology.
  • Implements ICARE principles using communication skills and human relations to promote quality patient care and productive working environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

HS Diploma

ASCP Registered Histotechnician

Kind and Length of Experience: Minimum 2 years of clinical laboratory experience and at least 6 months of Anatomic Pathology experience.

DESIRABLE

60 semester hours of academic credit including 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.

Two years’ experience in fixation, embedding, microtomy, tissue processing, staining, and histology operations.
