Novant Health is seeking a laboratory team member to prepare tissue sections for examination by a pathologist. The role involves fixation, dehydration, embedding, sectioning, decalcification, mounting, and dyeing of tissue specimens for diagnostic purposes.

You will assist in evaluating new techniques and help orient/train other personnel, with potential travel to community hospitals for frozen sections. On-call duties, including weekends/holidays, may be required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• One year of relevant laboratory tech experience (clinical internships of twelve months duration meet this requirement).
• One year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the US, Canada or an accredited laboratory within the last ten years.

What We Offer

Team member is responsible for preparing sections of body tissue for examination by a pathologist to diagnose body dysfunction and malignancy. This includes the preparation of tissue specimens of human origin for diagnostic or teaching purposes. Team member will process sections of body tissue by fixation, dehydration, embedding, sectioning, decalcification, micro incineration and mounting. Team member prepares dyes and chemical solutions and processes frozen sections. Team member will also assist in the evaluation of new or modified techniques when required. They will advise and assist in the orientation and training of other personnel in equipment and software as necessary. May include occasional travel to community hospitals for assistance with frozen sections. May include weekend and holiday on-call (rotating assignment).

What We're Looking For

• Education: High School Diploma or GED, required.
• Experience: One year of relevant laboratory tech experience (clinical internships of twelve months duration meet this requirement), required. One year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the US, Canada or an accredited laboratory within the last ten years, required.
• Additional Skills/Requirements (required):
  • Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tests.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results.
  • Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests.
  • Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, hospital staff and the public.
  • Ability to read and understand information about instrumentation in laboratory field.
  • Ability to follow written protocols.
  • Ability to work independently.
