Job summary

The City of Alexandria, Virginia, seeks an Urban Planner II to join the Historic Preservation unit. You will work on preservation reviews, engage with stakeholders, and support the BAR process in a dynamic urban setting near the DC metro area.

You will conduct site inspections, prepare staff reports, assist with presentations, and help ensure compliance with preservation guidelines across historic districts.

Qualifications

• Four-year degree or higher in regional/urban planning or closely related field.
• Three years of experience or Master’s degree with 1 year experience.
• Experience reading architectural designs and construction documents; familiarity with preservation methods.

Responsibilities

• Serve as primary point of contact for the public and City staff.
• Assist with administration and enforcement of historic preservation regulations.
• Receive, review and manage applications and case files.
• Conduct complex architectural, historical, and zoning research related to BAR cases and permits.
• Reviews final construction documents for compliance with approvals.
