Summary

The position is part of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (P&LM) Service at the Erie VA Medical Center. The histopathology technician is responsible for performing a wide range of stat, routine, complex, and specialized tests with minimal on-site supervision. These procedures include processing, embedding, and cutting human tissues for analysis via light microscopy.

Duties

Major Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Perform technical procedures such as using the automated histology processor and preparing tissues for analysis.
  • Evaluate specimen suitability and follow guidelines for specimen handling.
  • Prepare reagents for manual and instrument-driven staining procedures.
  • Accurately enter workload information into the VISTA program in the absence of supervision.
  • Verify processor operation, identify issues, and recommend repairs.
  • Review test results for discrepancies and artifacts.
  • Participate in evaluating new instrumentation, reagents, and methodologies.
  • Keep current with developments in the field through journals and professional meetings.
  • Notify supervisor of histology errors and take corrective actions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule

Two days per week - 30 hours per pay period. Days are negotiable.

Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Subject to drug screening and background/security investigation.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Participation in seasonal influenza vaccination program required.
Qualifications

Applicants pending educational or certification requirements may be tentatively selected but not hired until requirements are met. Basic requirements include U.S. citizenship, specific education or experience in healthcare or related fields, and proficiency in English. Grade levels GS-5 and GS-6 have different experience and skill requirements, with GS-6 requiring demonstrated knowledge of pathology principles and independent judgment.
