Job summary

Mosaic Life Care is seeking a Histotechnician to process tissue specimens and prepare slides for pathologists. You will maintain the histology area, perform special stains, and ensure accurate logging of blocks and slides while supporting nurses and physicians.

The role requires a HS diploma and 2 years of related histology experience; ASCP HT/HTL certification is preferred. Occasional travel between facilities may be necessary in northwest Missouri.

Qualifications

• HS diploma required; associate’s or bachelor’s preferred.
• 2 years related Histology experience required.
• ASCP HT/HTL certification preferred upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Embed, section, stain, cover-slip, and label tissues for pathologists.
• Inventory, stock supplies, and maintain histology areas and equipment.
• Perform special stains as directed by pathologists.
• Prepare specimens for send-out and enter patient information.
• Identify instrument issues and coordinate repairs as needed.
• Assist in evaluation of new testing and maintain stain quality.
• Maintain files for blocks and slides; travel between facilities as needed.

Job Description

The Histotechnician (HT) works under the supervision of the Director and department lead, to process tissue specimens for examination by the pathologists, maintain the areas used for tissue examinations, perform special stains, maintain an accurate log of the specimens, maintain files of blocks and tissue slides, monitor the supplies and reagents as necessary and Rotatescall. Gives excellent customer service.

Responsibilities

• Embed, section, make slides, stain, coverslip, and label tissues for examination by the pathologists.
• Inventory, order, and stock supplies and clean pathology grossing areas, frozen section rooms, histology area and maintain all equipment. Maintains policy and procedures are current for the department.
• Perform special stains as directed by the pathologists.
• Take telephone calls and prepare specimens for send out. Perform computer operations necessary to enter patient information, order tests and charge for procedures.
• Recognizes instrument issues, malfunction and takes appropriate action.
• Participates in evaluation of new testing.
• Prepare and maintain the quality of Histology and cytology stains and reagents.
• Maintain files of tissue blocks and slides.
• Pick up specimen from surgery and GI Lab as needed.
• Other duties as assigned

Work Experience

• 2 Years - Related experience - Required
• Training orientation will be up to eight weeks. - Required

Licenses and Certifications

• Histotechnician (HT) - ASCP - Required Upon Hire Or
• Histotechnologist (HTL) - ASCP - Required Upon Hire

Travel Requirements

• Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed. - Required

• Precise hand/ eye coordination is necessary to prepare and process specimens.

• Effective communication skills and ability to interact with patients, staff, visitors, physicians, etc.
• Must work well as a team member.

Essential Physical Requirements

• Ability to move between lab and other departments.
• Ability to stand and/or sit for long periods of time while working at instruments.
• Ability to bend and/or sit, stoop and lift 20-30 pounds.

Essential Mental Abilities

• Ability to follow rules/instructions such as procedures for processing specimens.

Essential Sensory Requirements

• Ability to see and to distinguish color.

Exposure to Hazards

• Infectious body fluids, hazardous chemicals and fumes.
