Job summary

Northwell Health seeks a Histotechnologist to prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination. You will gross, process, embed, cut sections, and stain slides, including H&E and specialized methods, with strict records and patient confidentiality.

Requirements include a Bachelor's degree and current New York licensure to practice in this field, with 0–1 years' technical experience preferred. Expect to train staff and work under minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Prepares (grosses) tissue specimens for processing with identification throughout.
• Fix, dehydrate, clear, and embed tissue specimens.
• Performs microtomy to cut thin sections and mount on slides.
• Performs routine and special histological staining (H&E).
• Executes specialized staining techniques (immunohistochemistry, enzyme histochemistry, immune fluorescence and ISH).
• Operates automated staining equipment and troubleshoots issues.
• Maintains accurate records and patient confidentiality.
• Assists in training new laboratory personnel.
• Uses independent judgment within defined parameters.
• Works under minimal supervision.
• Assists senior team members in method selection and analytical approach.
• Majority of contact is within own department supporting day-to-day clinical cases.
• May mentor and train team members and assist department management in daily operations.
• Performs related duties as required; all essential functions per ADA.

Job description

Performs a variety of technical tasks to prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination by a Pathologist to include grossing and frozen sections; pursuant to established and approved protocols, including maintaining equipment and records, and performing quality assurance activities related to examination performance requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility.

Job Responsibility

• 1.Prepares (grosses) tissue specimens for processing by describing and measuring them while ensuring proper identification throughout processes.
• 2.Fix, dehydrate, clear, and embed tissue specimens using appropriate techniques.
• 3.Performs microtomy, using a microtome to cut thin sections of tissue from embedded blocks, and mount tissue sections onto slides for staining prep.
• 4.Performs routine and special histological staining procedures, including Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining.
• 5.Executes specialized staining techniques, i.e. immunohistochemistry, enzyme histochemistry, immune flouresence and in situ hybridization.
• 6.Operates automated staining equipment, solutions, and reagents, and troubleshoots any issues.
• 7.Maintains accurate records of all procedures performed and maintain patient confidentiality.
• 8.Assists in the training of new laboratory personnel.
• 9.Uses independent judgment within defined parameters

• 11.Assists senior team members in the selection of methods, techniques, and analytical approach
• 12.Majority of contact is within own department or unit supporting team members carrying out the day to day on clinical cases
• 13.May mentor and train team members on technical skills team members and department or unit management with carrying out daily clinical operation

Job Qualification

• 1.Bachelor's Degree required.
• 2.Current License to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Histotechnologist in New York State required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
• 3.0-1 years of technical experience, required.
