Job summary

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Plymouth is seeking a Per Diem Histology Technician to join our pathology lab. You will prepare, process, and stain tissue specimens for examination by pathologists, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in a high-volume setting.

The role requires a HS Diploma with AS degree preferred, and HT(ASCP) certification or equivalent experience. Training will be provided for histology techniques and safety, with emphasis on quality and teamwork.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma required; AS degree preferred for advancement.
• HT(ASCP) certification or equivalent with pathology lab experience.
• Completion of histology certification within 18 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, process, embed, cut, stain and mount tissue specimens for pathologist review.
• Perform IHC and other special stains with quality control slides.
• Accession specimens in the Laboratory Information System and document results.
• Train new staff and interns in histology techniques and safety procedures.
• Maintain clean, organized work areas and proper inventory levels.

It is the philosophy of BID-Plymouth to follow the LEAN methodology in order to provide the full continuum of health care services and the best quality patient centered care.Duties/Responsibilities:Prepare, process, embed, cut, coverslip, stain and mount tissue specimens for evaluation and examination by the pathologist.Perform special staining procedures, including IHC on tissue and quality control slides as requested.Accession specimens for Pathology and Cytology in the computer.Communicate with appropriate provider regarding specimen problemsPrepare GYN and Non-GYN cytology specimens and order molecular studiesPerform routine maintenance of equipment and instruments and keep appropriate records.Maintain inventory, communicate ordering needs to Clinical SpecialistMaintain work area in a clean and safe manner.Attend laboratory meetings, in-service education meetings and educational seminars as requested.Pick up specimens regularly from all areas of hospital.Perform frozen sections.Train both new employees and intern staff in assigned area of expertise.Dispose of specimens in correct manner.Dispose of hazardous chemicals in a safe and appropriate manner.It is understood that this is a summary of key job functions and does not include every detail of the job that may reasonably be required.Education/Experience Required:HS DiplomaA.S. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.Pay Range:$28.90 – $54.80This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. The pay range for this position is established and governed by the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
