Job summary

Advocate Health is seeking a Histology technician at the Baycare Medical Center: Histology department in Wisconsin. This full-time position supports gross room operations and anatomic pathology workflow, ensuring proper processing and distribution of tissue samples.

Requires Associate’s degree in science-related field and typically 5 years of related experience, with strong attention to detail and communication skills. Schedule includes 40 hours per week with potential weekends/holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure smooth operation of gross room function and clean/maintain Anatomic Pathology per CAP/OSHA standards.
  • Receive in-house specimen deliveries and route slides to pathologists promptly.
  • Order supplies and monitor usage; coordinate with supply chain to resolve issues.
  • Oversee filing and storage of specimen blocks and slides; maintain accurate records.
  • Ensure accurate tissue part type and transfer to IL Central Lab as required.
  • Maintain chain-of-custody documentation and retrieve slides for patients and conferences.
  • Coordinate work assignments across autopsy, FNA, gross room, and billing; escalate issues.
  • Teach/training of gross room techniques; act as resource to staff and residents.
  • Update department policies and procedures with supervisor/director.

Pay Range:

$24.10 - $36.15

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assures the smooth operation of all gross room function, all Anatomic Pathology is cleaned, disinfected and maintained according to CAP and OSHA standards.
  • Ensures that in-house specimen deliveries are received and noted on schedule. Ensures that incoming slides by couriers are promptly distributed to pathologists.
  • Orders supplies according to standard operating procedures. Monitors supply usage. Ensures adequate levels of supplies and timely placement of orders. Works with supply chain management to resolve any quality issues.
  • Oversees filing and storage of specimen blocks and slides; Performs, teaches and assures filing and documentation procedures are followed for specimen blocks and slides; Assures accurate record-keeping and filing of all specimens and slides. Organizes and appropriately stores specimens from other sites. Maintains necessary records and disposes specimens in accordance with CAP regulations.
  • Ensures accuracy of tissue part type and that work is completed is a safe and efficient manner. Ensures that specimens in cassettes are sent to IL Central Lab (ICL) and slide specimens are received by courier from ICL and all documentation complete and accurate.
  • Assures accurate and timely retrieval of slides for patients, conferences and send-outs. Assures accurate and detailed chain of custody documentation.
  • Documents problems and takes corrective action relating to specimens, equipment or complaints. Reports unresolved or unusual situations or problems to the supervisor. Utilizes principles of Continuous Quality Improvement.
  • Under the direction of the laboratory supervisor, coordinates work assignments in autopsy, FNA, gross room, filing slide distribution and billing. Communicates and escalates concerns that occur during the scheduled shift to supervisor for appropriate resolution.
  • Performs, teaches and trains all facets of gross room techniques, frozen sections and fine needle aspirations to associates, residents and new pathologists. Serves as technical resource to staff, as appropriate.
  • In conjunction with supervisor and director, updates and maintains department policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

License/Registration/Certification Required: None Required

Education Required: Associate’s Degree in Science Related field

Experience Required: Typically requires 5 years of related experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Knowledge of human anatomy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of biologic sciences and medical terminology.
  • Must know how to safely handle sharp instruments.
  • Must be detail oriented and have good organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include alternate site assignment and on-call for autopsies.
  • Keyboarding and typing skills.
  • Proficient computer skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to operate all equipment necessary to perform the duties of the job.
  • Frequently lifts up to 20 lbs. Occasionally required to move up to 200 lbs.
  • Sits, stands and walks the majority of the workday as well as lifts, squats, bends and twists throughout.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, radioactive and infectious agents therefore, must wear protective clothing and equipment (lab coat, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection )as needed.
  • Will be exposed to human blood, body fluids, tissues and cadavers therefore, must wear protective clothing and equipment (lab coat, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection) as needed.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
