Job summary

Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital is seeking a pathology technician to perform accessioning and technical preparation of specimens for diagnosis. The role requires handling of specimens, staining, and slide preparation, with responsibility for LIS data entry and interdepartmental collaboration.

The position includes routing specimens from surgery and endoscopy, supporting cytology and histology workflows, and assisting pathologists and assistants as needed.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Accession and technically prepare pathology specimens for evaluation.
• Complete gross description and dictation of simple specimens.
• Transport specimens to relevant laboratories across the hospital campus.
• Enter data into the LIS and manage billing of specimens.
• Stain, coverslip, and prepare slides for review by pathologists.
• Assist with frozen sections and provide support to Cytology/Histology staff.

Job description

Location: Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital

Shift: Monday-Friday 9am-530pm , rotating call for weekend/holidays

Status: Full time, 40 hours a week

Primary responsibilities include performing all necessary procedures pertaining to accessioning and technical preparation of all pathology specimens. This individual must function with a high degree of technical expertise regarding handling of specimens to ensure accuracy of diagnoses made from specimens submitted for evaluation.

Completes Gross description and dictation of simple surgical specimens.

Picks up pathology specimens from various locations throughout the hospital and campus such as surgery, endoscopy, etc.

Responsible for proper handling, accessioning, and billing of all pathology specimens through entering data into the LIS computer application.

Prints labels and work lists.

Answers telephone and assists coworkers, patients, staff, and pathologists as needed.

Demonstrates proficiency and understanding of Cytology preparations and procedures including NONGYN's and Liquid Based PAP's, using established quality control standards to ensure patient safety.

Stains and coverslips all NON-GYN, GYN, and other pathology slides utilizing proper techniques.

Prepares frozen sections including cutting and staining.

Assists Pathologists and Pathologist Assistants in designated procedures.

Distributes slides and paperwork to cytotechnologists or pathologists.

Monitors inventory for Pathology areas.

Follows policy and procedures for storage length and proper disposal of blocks, slides, surgical specimens, requisitions, and reports.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Education:

High school diploma or

Associate degree in a chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution preferred, OR

Education/training equivalent to the above that includes the following:

Experience:

• One year experience working in Cytology Preparation and/ or Histology Processing preferred, with knowledge of medical terminology.
