Job summary

Advocate Health is seeking a Histologic Technician II for the Anatomic Pathology lab on the Winston Campus. This PRN, part-time role involves embedding and microtomy, with shift negotiations and <20 hours per week.

Position requires an ASCP-recognized degree or equivalent training, with 3 years of experience preferred and HT (ASCP) certification preferred. Base duties include accessioning, processing, and staining of specimens.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or high school diploma with two years training as defined by ASCP/NSH.
  • Three years' experience in a clinical histology lab preferred.
  • HT (ASCP) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Accession specimens accurately and label them per departmental standards.
  • Process and stain specimens according to lab protocols.
  • Ensure timely processing and accurate reporting of results.
  • Perform embedding and microtomy procedures as part of routine work.
  • Maintain quality and safety standards to prevent exposure to hazards.

Education/Experience/Certifications to Qualify:
  • Associate's degree in applied science or high school diploma/GED with two years training as defined by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Society of Histotechnology.
  • Three years' experience in a clinical histology lab preferred.
  • HT (ASCP) certification preferred.
Essential Functions:
  • Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.
  • Assures accurate and timely accessioning, labeling and billing of specimens, according to departmental practices.
  • Assures accurate and timely processing and staining of specimens, according to departmental practices.
  • Provides maximum care in identification procedures when processing patient specimens.
  • Performs special stains and/or enzyme histochemical stains.
  • Performs additional Anatomic Pathology Department laboratory procedures.
  • Improves work skills through self-study and continuing education.
  • Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the section and department.
  • Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of bloodborne and/or airborne diseases.
  • Exhibits and promotes the professional image of laboratories in accordance with hospital, department, and professional society philosophies, goals and standards of laboratory testing.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • Associate degree in applied science or high school diploma/GED with two years training as defined by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Society of Histotechnology.
  • Three years' experience in a clinical histology lab preferred.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:
  • HT (ASCP) certification preferred.
