Job summary

Jefferson University Physicians in Center City Philadelphia (and Greenville, DE as needed) seeks a Histotechnician/Histotechnologist for per diem coverage. The role involves embedding, microtomy, staining, immunohistochemistry, and special stains to prepare tissues for diagnosis.

You will work with a team, maintain reagents/equipment, and support educational activities while ensuring accurate test results and proficient lab operations.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in related life science or HT(ASCP) certification with lab experience.
• Experience with embedding, microtomy, staining and special stains preferred.
• Ability to communicate results and collaborate with clinical staff.

Responsibilities

• Perform histological procedures including embedding, cutting and staining.
• Prepare tissue samples for diagnosis and ensure slide quality.
• Record maintenance and troubleshoot instruments as needed.
• Validate orders and transmit test data to systems.
• Monitor QC data and implement corrective actions when needed.
• Assist orientation and training of new staff and students.

This is a per diem position that will cover call-outs, vacations, etc. This position will be required to work in both Center City, Philadelphia and Greenville, DE offices as needed.

The Histotechnician/Histotechnologist performs laboratory tissue testing according to established procedures and protocols. The Histotechnician/Histotechnologist receives, processes, and prepares tissue samples for diagnosis using such procedures as embedding, microtomy, staining, cover-slipping, Immunohistochemistry and special stains. The Histotechnician/Histotechnologist may also specialize in a given laboratory discipline(s), and works effectively as a team member within the department and with other departments to provide quality service through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.

Job Description

Essential Functions

• Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
• Performs histological procedures including embedding, cutting, and staining surgical, biopsy and anatomical tissues for light and fluorescent microscopic slide review. Recognizes deviation from expected results and analyzes and corrects problems within established periods to expedite diagnosis.
• Maintains reagents and equipment in proper quantities and condition. Records instrument maintenance troubleshoots where necessary to insure accurate generation of test results.
• Uses computer equipment to receive and validate laboratory orders to record and transmit test data efficiently.
• Analyzes and records QC data with appropriate follow-up. May implement corrective action after consultation with supervisory personnel to verify accuracy and precision of instruments and staining quality
• Communicates with clinical staff about specimen submission requirements to answer inquiries about test results and methodology to keep medical staff knowledgeable of laboratory functions.
• Participates in orientation and training of new employees and students, hospital and laboratory inservice and continuing education programs and mandated annual proficiency testing to ensure currency of job knowledge and technical competency.
• Performs other duties as assigned by lead, supervisor, or manager.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in related life science or applied science field OR HEW/HHS or HT(ASCP) certification with laboratory experience in lieu of a degree AND Experience: 1-2 years’ previous experience preferred; student training accepted.

Minimum Certifications, Registration Or License Requirements

HT (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.
