Responsibilities
- Direct coding processes to ensure compliance and efficiency.
- Develop and monitor productivity standards for coding of medical records.
- Serve as liaison with Patient Financial Services, Inpatient and Outpatient Program Managers.
- Utilize coding/abstracting systems and ensure computer systems are updated with annual code changes or charges.
- Act as a resource for coding staff and medical staff to address documentation issues and questions.
- Provide orientation, handle personnel actions, staff evaluations, training, and in‑service to coding staff.
- Ensure codes are supported by provider documentation and reliable data collection.
- Promote a culture of integrity, maintain an open‑door policy, and prevent retaliation against those reporting good‑faith concerns.
- Perform hiring, training, scheduling, counseling, evaluating, and terminating employees within supervision areas.
- Practice safety techniques in accordance with Center and departmental policies, and report injuries or other safety issues.
- Monitor and enforce compliance with regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and related policies.
- Identify potential risk areas and support problem‑resolution processes.

Required Minimum Education
- Two‑ or four‑year degree from an accredited Health Information Technology or Management program or an accredited healthcare‑related course of study.
Required Minimum Certification
- RHIT or RHIA certification preferred; CPC or RHIT/RHIA or CCS‑P/CCS or equivalent combination acceptable.
Required Minimum Experience
- Minimum three years of recent acute care and/or physician practice coding experience.
- Minimum three years of progressive supervisory or management experience in coding or HIM, preferably at a large group or system level.
- Proven history of managing a successful coding team.
- Five or more years of related healthcare experience, including 4–5 years coding in outpatient or inpatient settings.
- Proficiency at researching and solving problems, and willingness to educate physicians.
- Experience with 10‑key, medical terminology, ICD‑10, CPT, and HCPCS.
- In‑depth knowledge of Medicare and other payer coding, billing, and reimbursement guidelines.
- Leadership and communication skills.
Required Minimum Skills
- Advanced knowledge of ICD‑10‑CM/PCS Coding Guidelines, CPT‑4, HCPCS, Coding Clinic, DRG reimbursement, and professional fee coding.
- Extensive knowledge of complex disease processes, reimbursement systems, and federal/state/payer‑specific regulations on documentation and coding.
- Advanced software skills in Microsoft Office, Cerner Millennium, Encoder, and ChargeMaster systems (Epic experience a plus).
- Product development and continuous quality improvement knowledge.
- Broad knowledge of insurance regulations, Medicare, and Medicaid guidelines.
- Skill in preparing and maintaining records and written reports.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with physicians, hospital staff, and vendors.
- Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply coding guidelines and procedures.
- Ability to analyze complex clinical scenarios and apply critical thinking.
- Experience with Libman Coding Education platform (preferred).
Preferred Qualifications
- Three years of recent acute care or LTACH experience and progressive supervisory experience within coding or HIM environment.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Physical Demands
Work is primarily seated but may involve walking or standing briefly. Occasionally lift or carry up to 15 pounds.
