Job summary

State of South Carolina's Department of Transportation seeks a Crew Foreman for Orangeburg Maintenance to supervise a crew of Highway Maintenance Workers performing pothole patching, right-of-way clearing, ditch and drainage work, and driveway installations.

You will maintain HMMS reports, handle personnel actions, and coordinate on-call responses during hazardous weather while ensuring public safety and compliance with DOT standards.

Qualifications

• 3.5 years of related work experience, or equivalent.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.
• CDL Class A to be obtained within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Supervises a crew of Highway Maintenance Workers on the Work Request Crew performing pothole patching, right-of-way clearing, ditch and drainage work, and driveway installations.
• Handles, recommends and/or takes corrective action in connection with damage to SCDOT or private property.
• Completes work requests from the general public regarding drainage problems on the highway right of way.
• Maintains weekly and monthly reports, time sheets and cost records; recommends personnel actions including promotions, transfers, and disciplinary measures; rates employee yearly according to the Employee Performance Management System.
• Maintains HMMS paperwork and reports essential to the department.
• Provides on-call services as needed and coordinates responses during hazardous weather events.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job description

Performs Crew Foreman duties with Orangeburg Maintenance. Supervises a crew of skilled and semi-skilled Highway Maintenance Workers on the Work Request Crew that are involved in a variety of maintenance activities such as patching potholes, clearing right of way, cleaning ditches and drainage pipes, and installing driveways. Handles, recommends and/or takes corrective action in connection with damage to SCDOT or private property, which are complex in nature. Completes work request from the general public in reference to drainage problems and needs on the highway right of way. Maintains weekly and monthly reports, time sheets and cost records; recommends personnel actions including promotions, transfers, and disciplinary measures; rates employee yearly according to the Employee Performance Management System. Maintains all paperwork and reports (HMMS) that are essential to the department. Performs on-call services as needed. Supervises and coordinates crew during hazardous weather events including snow and ice, and storms. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Three and one-half (3.5) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
