Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking a Crew Leader for highway maintenance who will supervise a field crew and perform skilled manual labor along roadways. You will remove fallen trees, cut vegetation, operate mowers, backhoes, skid steers, and dump trucks while coordinating with traffic control teams.

You must have two years of related work experience and obtain a Class A CDL within six months. Safety training, daily record-keeping, and on-call duties may be required.

Job description

Serves as crew leader and performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as removing fallen trees from roadway, cutting dead trees on right-of-way and low hanging limbs over roadway. Assists with directing mowing and right-of-way vegetation management operations. Operates side-mount combination mowers, slope mowers, skid steers, batwing mowers, backhoes, and front end loaders in roadside and right-of-way vegetation management operations as necessary. Assists with devising a schedule for work to be performed by maintenance crew. Quantifies daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS) and the maintenance requests and complaints forms. Assists with instructing crew members daily in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists Crew Foreman with managing assigned crew(s) in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include on-call personnel for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts in emergency or inclement weather operations. May include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator ’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
