Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation in Sumter is seeking a crew leader for the ditching crew to complete work orders, operate the ditcher, tractor, backhoe, and loader, and ensure safety in work zones.

This position requires two years of related experience, a valid driver's license, and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within six months; lifting up to 50 lbs and outdoor conditions are expected.

Job description

In Sumter Maintenance, serves as the crew leader in completing work orders assigned to the ditching crew such as repairing and maintaining ditches and shoulders in Sumter County. Operates the ditcher and ditching tractor. Performs skilled manual labor and operates heavy equipment such as the backhoe and front end loader. Assists in maintaining weekly and monthly reports, time sheets, and cost records. Completes job hazard analysis forms, mitigates risk and conducts safety meeting prior to the commencement of work activities to inform cream of the hazards associated with the work to be performed. Sets up and instructs the crew members daily in traffic control operations for work zones for the safety of the crew and traveling motorists. Operates large roller and tandem dump truck during various roadway maintenance. Operates a standard dump truck with a snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists with other emergencies as needed.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
