Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled Equipment Operator to support highway maintenance projects across the state. You will operate a tandem dump truck, haul materials such as asphalt and debris, and assist with ditch work, pipe cleaning, and roadside maintenance.

Responsibilities include traffic flagging during repairs, assisting with traffic control setups, and responding to inclement weather or after-hour emergencies.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A CDL within six months of placement in the position.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks including bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, and climbing.

• Operate a tandem dump truck hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris.
• Work with a maintenance crew performing ditch and shoulder work, cleaning pipes and ditches including pipe ends and roadside structures.
• Flag traffic during road repairs to control flow and protect workers and the public; assist with traffic control setup.
• Operate a chain saw on right-of-way; assist with inclement weather and after-hour emergencies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Responsibilities

Works with a maintenance crew performing ditch and shoulder work, cleaning pipes and ditches to include cleaning pipe ends, removing and replacing mailboxes, posts and highway signs. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic, protect equipment, workers and general public. Assists supervisor in traffic control setup. Operates a chain saw in cutting trees on right-of-way. Assists with inclement weather and after hour emergencies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
