Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled equipment operator to perform roadway maintenance tasks and operate tandem dump trucks and other medium equipment. The role includes manual labor for pothole repairs, patching, paving, drainage work, and traffic control to ensure safety.

Responsibilities

• Operates tandem dump trucks for hauling materials (asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, debris).
• Operates other medium equipment: belt loader, large roller, skid steer loader.
• Performs manual labor for roadway maintenance tasks (litter control, potholes, base repairs, patching, paving, drainage, shoulder work).
• Assists in grading and leveling to ensure proper drainage; uses tools like chainsaws and electric/gas-powered devices.
• Flags traffic to protect workers and the public; performs pre-operation maintenance and responds to emergencies and inclement weather.

Job description

Job Responsibilities

Operates tandem dump trucks for hauling materials such as: asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris. Operates other medium equipment such as a belt loader, large roller, and skid steer loader. Performs duties using manual labor, in such maintenance tasks as litter control, removal of dead animals, clearing of right-of-way, tree & limb removal, patching potholes, making base repairs, chip seal, paving, repair to bridges, paving driveways and laying sideline/crossline pipes. Performs duties using manual labor in repairing hi/lo shoulders, cleaning and repairing drainage ditches, pipes and other structures throughout the county. Assists in the operation of a motor grader or backhoe in grading, machining shoulders, spreading and leveling materials in order to ensure proper drainage of roadways. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools (chainsaw in cutting trees from right-of-ways) in various phases of roadway maintenance. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment. Performs, conducts, documents pre-operation preventative maintenance on equipment as outlines in equipment specifications, perform manual labor as necessary in maintaining building and grounds. Works during emergencies and inclement weather operations, may include being available for overtime, extended working hours and/or 12 hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
