Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a capable worker to operate and maintain medium motorized equipment across roadway maintenance projects. You will contribute to base and surface repairs, patching, leveling, and resurfacing preparation while coordinating traffic control in work zones.

Six months of related experience is required, with a Class A CDL to be obtained within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains medium motorized equipment used in roadway maintenance (e.g., tandem dump truck, patcher, spreader, rollers, skid steer).
  • Performs base and surface repairs, patching, leveling, and preparation for resurfacing.
  • Assists in traffic control for maintenance work zones.
  • Participates in emergency and inclement weather operations and may work extended hours or 12-hour shifts.

Job description

Job Responsibilities

Operates and maintains medium motorized equipment used in various phases of roadway maintenance. (e.g.; tandem dump truck, trailer mounted injection patcher, aggregate spreader, large roller >4 Tons, skid steer loader, fuel service truck, etc.) Operates medium motorized equipment in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the State highway system. Examples include base and surface repairs of full depth asphalt/concrete, patching/minor leveling, major leveling/strengthening, digging out and backfilling bad areas in roadways in preparation for resurfacing and skim-patching all within Dorchester County. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Performs manual labor as necessary patching potholes and base surface failures using electric/gas powered tools and hand tools to perform these duties. Examples of tools include drills, jacks, concrete saw, pavement breakers, air compressor, sprayers, shovel, asphalt lute, etc.) Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, to include operating medium duty equipment. May include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
