South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to perform district work orders, sign repairs and installation. Operates motorized equipment such as backhoes, dozers, loaders, graders and more, with duties including drainage work and pothole patching. May require overtime and extended shifts.

A valid Class A CDL is required within six months of placement. Physical tasks include lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, climbing, and working near traffic and weather

Function as a Heavy Equipment Operator engaging in District work orders, sign repairs and installation. Operates motorized equipment, such as, but not limited to: Backhoe, Cement Spreader, Distributor Truck, Dozer, Crawler, Excavator, Front End Loader, Lowboy Truck Tractor, Motor Grader, Road Patcher, Slope Mower, and Sweeper Truck Tractor with Ditcher. Performs various duties including manual labor or operating equipment in such maintenance tasks as clearing of right-of-ways, clearing and grading drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, paving driveways, laying pipes, building catch basins, pouring concrete for curbs, sidewalk and raised median. Perform traffic controls operations for work zones, to include flagging traffic for the safety of the crew and the public, during various phases of roadway maintenance. Assists with inclement weather operations, may include operation of equipment (medium and heavy) and being available for extended working hours and/or 12 hours shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis. Work overtime as necessary.
