Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a highway maintenance worker to perform skilled maintenance and operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, motor graders, and front-end loaders. Responsibilities include pavement repairs, preventive maintenance, and traffic-control set-up for work zones.

CDL-A required within six months in position. Candidates should have at least one year of related work experience and be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Job Responsibilities

In conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates heavy equipment such as: Backhoe, Motor Grader, and Front-End Loader. These skilled maintenance functions include but are not limited to: repairing asphalt and concrete pavement, performing full depth pavement and base repairs, performing minor pavement leveling operations. Performs a variety of other activities related to maintenance operations. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned heavy equipment to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. With various levels of formal and informal training, and in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, operates equipment such as: Asphalt Kettle, Brine Sprayer, Brush Chipper, Single-Axle Dump Truck, Forklift, Roller (<+4 tons), Snowplow, Spreader, Broom Tractor, Large Roller (>4 tons), Single-Axle Dump Truck with Trailer, Skid Steer, Tandem/Tri-Axle Dump Truck, Injection Road Patcher (Trailer Mounted), etc. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in tracking and recording daily work performed, including specific accomplishments, work locations, equipment utilized, and quantity of materials used. Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Operates both anti-icing and removal equipment during snow and ice response on highways and bridges. Operates a paver. Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
