Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking personnel to perform a range of tree and vegetation maintenance activities, including operating tools and equipment and assisting with traffic control in work zones.

The role requires a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and progression to a Class A CDL within six months. Candidates may be assigned extended hours or 12-hour shifts during inclement weather or emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Operate powered tools and hand tools for tree and vegetation maintenance.
• Assist with traffic control device placement and work-zone setup.
• Serve as a flagger to direct traffic in maintenance zones.
• Operate small equipment such as a dump truck or forklift.
• Pick up litter, debris and dead animals.
• Operate dump trucks with snowplow attachments and sand spreaders for snow/ice removal.
• Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations; may work extended hours or 12-hour shifts.

Operates standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator ’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
