Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a versatile equipment operator to handle dump trucks and related maintenance tasks. You will drive dump trucks, plow snow, spread sand, and apply brine during winter operations, while also operating small equipment for road maintenance and paving projects.

Strong emphasis on safety, traffic control support, and readiness to perform a variety of field duties in diverse weather and traffic conditions.

• CDL must be attained within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operates 5 yard standard dump truck for hauling materials.
• Operates dump truck with snow plow, sand spreader, or brine applicator during winter operations.
• Operates small equipment and assists with maintenance, pothole patching, and paving drives.
• Assists with traffic control devices and serves as a flagger in work zones.
• Performs additional maintenance duties and supports highway/bridge operations.

Job description

Operates 5 yard standard dump truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, dirt, pipe, construction materials, and debris. Operates dump truck with snow plow and sand spreader or brine applicator during snow/ice operations. Operates small equipment such as brush chipper, roller, self contained sweeper tractor with broom, tractor with mower in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations. Performs manual labor in various maintenance operations such as clearing right-of-ways, tree removal, cleaning out drainage ditches, repair of shoulders of roadway, patch potholes, and paving drives. Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Operates medium equipment such as tandem dump trucks, large roller, and skid steer in various maintenance operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
