Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled worker to perform manual labor tasks related to drainage, paving, and shoulder repairs. Responsibilities include operating dump trucks hauling asphalt, sand, limestone, and maintenance materials along right of way, and flagging traffic to protect workers and the traveling public.

You will also operate small equipment such as a self-propelled sweeper and a small roller, use a chainsaw and hand tools, and assist in snow and ice

Qualifications

• No minimum training or experience requirements for this classification.
• Requires a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Requires attainment of a Class A CDL within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Job description

Performs manual labor in building catch basins, pouring concrete for curbs and raised medians, laying pipes for driveways and other drainage structures, cleaning ditches, repairing shoulders clearing right-of-ways and repairing bridges. Operates standard dump truck hauling materials that consist of asphalt, sand clay, limestone and various maintenance materials for work performed along right of way and surface repairs. Flags traffic using proper flagging devices during shoulder work and surface repairs to protect workers, equipment and traveling public in the control of traffic safety. Operates various types of small equipment such as self-propelled sweeper, and a small roller. Operates chain saw and various hand tools in the clearing of right of way along ditches and highways. Assists in snow and ice, debris removal, and hurricane lane reversal plans. Operates a snowplow during hazardous weather. Performs other related duties as assigned.

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
