Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a maintenance worker to perform highway upkeep using light and medium equipment, including dump trucks and patching gear.

Responsibilities include operating tools such as chainsaws, rakes, and shovels; picking up litter and debris; and coordinating traffic control devices to safely set up work zones. CDL required within 6 months; no formal experience required beyond license attainment.

Qualifications

• Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Job Responsibilities

• Performs a variety of highway maintenance activities using small equipment such as operating a dump truck and road patching equipment.
• Performs skilled manual labor and operates tools such as chainsaws, rakes, and shovels in various phases of roadway maintenance.
• Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals.
• Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control and Field Guide to warn motorists.
• Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations; includes being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts, day or night.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

• The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards.
• May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
