Qualifications

• There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Must obtain a Class A CDL within six months of placement

Responsibilities

• Operates small equipment: sweeper, tractor with broom, and ten-foot mower for maintenance.
• Operates a dump truck with snow plow, sand spreader, or brine sprayer for snow/ice removal.
• Operates a 5-yard dump truck and flatbed for hauling asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, and debris.
• Performs manual labor in construction, repair, and preservation of state highways and bridges.
• Assists with placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones.
• Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic.
• Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadways and rights-of-way.
• Operates heavier equipment such as tractor with 15-foot mower and side-mounted mower.
• Operates and maintains small equipment, power tools, and hand tools for highway and bridge maintenance.
• Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment inspections following Department rules for fleet safety.
• Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may require extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Responsibilities

Operates small equipment such as self-contained sweeper, tractor with broom, and tractor with ten-foot mower in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations, and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader or brine sprayer applicator for removal of snow and ice from highways and bridges. Operates 5-yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris. Performs manual labor in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of state highway roads and bridges. Assists with placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic. Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way. Operates heavier equipment such as a tractor with a 15-foot mower and combination tractor with side mounted mower. Operates and maintains small equipment, power tools, and hand tools to perform a variety of highway and bridge maintenance activities. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies, and procedures for fleet safety. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
