Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation in Wagener is seeking workers to perform skilled manual labor and operate small equipment on the state highway system. You will work with a crew on projects including maintenance of roads, drainage, vegetation, signs, and pavement markings, and assist with traffic control in work zones.

A valid driver’s license is required, with the goal to obtain a Class A CDL within six months of placement.

Job description

Performs skilled manual labor and operates small equipment in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Operates small equipment to include but not limited to brush chipper, dump truck, hydroseeder, roller <4 tons, and tractor with broom or mower. Works with a crew of maintenance employees utilizing proper maintenance techniques, while performing duties using manual labor during roadway and right-of-way maintenance activities. Area of work may include but not limited to, driveway installation and maintenance, construction of drainage appurtenances, maintenance of drainage appurtenances, litter/debris removal, vegetation management, bridge maintenance, and patching/paving, limb and brush trimming, sign and pavement marking maintenance, etc. Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies and procedures according to fleet safety. Operates equipment, power tools, and hand tools to perform assigned maintenance activities. Performs duties during inclement weather and after hour emergencies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
