The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a part-time Highway Maintenance Worker 1–Rest Area to join our team in Prosser, WA. In this role, you’ll help maintain clean, safe, and welcoming facilities for the traveling public while supporting the day-to-day operations of the rest area and associated transportation facilities. Your work will include performing semi-skilled repairs, maintenance, and janitorial duties, as well as assisting travelers and responding to the needs of the facility.

From maintaining restroom facilities to helping keep the surrounding transportation facilities in good working condition, your contributions will help ensure travelers have access to safe, clean, and reliable facilities along the highway.
What to Expect
Typical part-time schedule is Sunday - Wednesday, 8:00am - 1:00pm, Or Wednesday - Saturday, 8:00am - 1:00pm, however, days and hours may vary.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 will:
- Maintain clean, safe, sanitary, and fully operational restroom facilities for the traveling public.
- Perform routine cleaning and facility maintenance, including sweeping, mopping, power washing, disinfecting, removing trash and graffiti, and maintaining floors, walls, fixtures, sinks, toilets, urinals, and other restroom surfaces.
- Replenish paper products, soap, and other supplies and monitor inventory to ensure supplies are available when needed.
- Perform routine facility upkeep, including cleaning vents and filters, removing cobwebs, replacing light bulbs, and addressing minor maintenance needs such as clogged drains and fixtures.
- Follow established sanitation and safety procedures and properly clean and disinfect areas following maintenance activities.
- Pick up and transport supplies and collect water samples as needed to support safe and reliable facility operations.
- Maintain clean, safe, and welcoming grounds and outdoor facilities for the traveling public.
- Perform routine grounds upkeep by collecting litter and debris, servicing trash and ash receptacles, and maintaining parking areas, walkways, lawns, picnic areas, pet areas, and other public-use spaces.
- Clean and maintain picnic tables, benches, exterior building areas, light fixtures, display cases, utility rooms, and other facility features.
- Support the operation and upkeep of specialized facilities, including RV dump stations and related equipment.
- During winter weather, help maintain safe access to the facility by operating a pickup with snow-plow and blower attachments, loader, and hand tools to clear snow from entrances, exits, parking areas, sidewalks, and around buildings.
- Apply de-icing materials as needed to help reduce snow and ice hazards and maintain safe access for the traveling public.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:
- Licensing & Certification: Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to drive state vehicles at the time of hire. Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Ability to obtain and maintain a First Aid Certification with 6 months of hire.
- Safety Awareness & Compliance: Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling. Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training. Ability to interpret Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for the proper mixing and handling of chemicals.

The following qualifications are also required:
- Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:
- Foundational Maintenance Knowledge and Application: Demonstrated ability to perform basic maintenance activities in a related field, following established procedures and safety practices.
- Basic Tools and Equipment: Demonstrated ability to safely select, use, and maintain basic hand tools and power equipment to perform routine maintenance activities in a facility or work environment.
